Occupational Health Practitioner

Position summary:

Reporting to the Director of Quality, Risk and Occupational Health, the Occupational Health Practitioner is responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive employee health surveillance program in accordance with the Public Hospitals Act and OHA/OMA Guidelines. Working closely with HR, managers, and external partners, this role provides expert guidance and hands-on support across all areas of occupational health — from clinical assessments and disability management to return-to-work coordination and workplace wellness — helping to foster a secure and healthy environment for all staff.

Responsibilities include:

- Conduct pre-placement and periodic health assessments, reviewing medical history questionnaires to identify conditions requiring further evaluation or workplace accommodation
- Provide first aid for work-related injuries and illness, including follow-up care, employee counselling, and referral to appropriate medical or rehabilitation services
- Assess employees returning from illness or injury and communicate functional abilities and restrictions to managers to support safe and timely return to work
- Oversees infectious disease prevention initiatives including employee immunization programs, the annual Influenza Campaign, and ongoing collaboration with Infection Control and Public Health and provide required staff vaccination and conduct N-95 mask testing
- Manage WSIB claims end-to-end including Board communications, relief requests, post-injury care coordination, and ongoing employee follow-up throughout the absence period




- Administer Long Term Disability (LTD) documentation and coordinate all return-to-work stakeholders including medical practitioners, rehabilitation centres, insurers, HR, and managers
- Develop and coordinate modified work plans, supporting employees and managers through accommodation and early intervention strategies focused on recovery and rehabilitation
- Deliver occupational health orientation for new staff and facilitate education sessions for employees and managers on ergonomics, accident prevention, and workplace health and safety
- Maintain comprehensive, confidential employee health records and prepare occupational health indicator reports, statistical data, and required submissions to the Ministry of Health, Public Health, and OHA (Ontario Hospital Association)
- Collaborate with stakeholders to administer the Attendance Support Management Program (ASMP), develop Occ Health policies and procedures, and participate in the Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee
- Promotes a culture of safety by participating in safety education, reporting incidents and unsafe situations, and complying with safe work procedures

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications/experience:

- Degree/Diploma in Nursing is required
- Current certificate of competence as a Registered Nurse or Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing is required
- Degree/Diploma in Occupational Health or Disability Management preferred
- Certified Registered Safety Professional or Certified Disability Management Professional preferred




- Hospital/healthcare setting experience preferred
- Minimum 2 years in Occupational Health including disability management
- Current BCLS/First Aid Certificate
- Strong written & verbal communication
- Complex decision-making & critical thinking
- Exceptional organization & time management
- Proficiency in Parklane System; Microsoft Office Suite
- Respiratory fit testing an asset
- Statistical/report analysis an asset
