The County of Essex is seeking a Road Operator to join our Roads Maintenance team on a full-time basis. Reporting to the Road Maintenance Supervisor, this role is responsible for operating trucks and road maintenance equipment, hauling materials, performing road and yard maintenance activities, and providing critical winter control services including snow plowing and salting operations on County roads. The successful candidate will also lead and coordinate additional staff assigned to specific maintenance activities.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will be responsible for:

1. Road Maintenance Operations
- Operate trucks and road maintenance equipment in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and Health and Safety legislation.
- Haul materials required for the maintenance and construction of County roads.
- Perform road maintenance activities including shouldering, pothole repair, sign straightening, flagging traffic, winging snow, and other assigned operations.
- Provide various maintenance duties at the Road Maintenance Yard.

1. Winter Control Operations
- Operate winter control equipment, including combination salter/plow trucks, on predetermined routes during adverse weather and poor visibility conditions.




- Assess road and weather conditions and determine when salting is required and the appropriate salt application rate in accordance with established procedures.
- Adjust salt discharge based on hydraulic controls, wind, temperature, and other environmental conditions.
- Perform winging back of snow and carry out snow plowing in a safe and efficient manner while exercising caution around pedestrians, vehicles, railway crossings, and other hazards.
- Participate in a 24-hour on-call rotation during the winter control season.
- Accurate record keeping of winter control activities

1. Operational Coordination and Equipment Maintenance
- Lead and coordinate the work of additional employees assigned to maintenance operations such as asphalt repairs, sign maintenance, shouldering, ditching, tree trimming, and pothole repairs.
- Routine maintenance and service of vehicles and equipment in accordance with established maintenance schedules.
- Complete accurate and concise records of time, materials, and activities to support proper cost allocation and operational reporting.

What You Bring Education and Certifications:

- - Must have an Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent.

Experience and Expertise:

- - Minimum of three (3) months of experience in road construction or maintenance and snow plowing.
- Experience operating trucks and road maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of secure work practices, traffic control procedures, and winter maintenance operations.
- Ability to lead and coordinate the work of other employees during assigned operations.

Other Requirements:

- - Valid and maintained Ontario Class "DZ" driver's licence,



with successful completion of the County of Essex driving test administered by an external testing company
- Availability to work rotational on-call shifts, including 24-hour on-call availability during the winter months, as well as nights, weekends, overtime, and extended hours during winter control operations and emergency situations.
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions and perform physically demanding duties.
- Ability to provide a Ministry of Transportation Driver Abstract (successful candidate will provide driver’s license number and the employer will run the abstract)
- Must provide a Police Information Check (PIC) (successful candidate will provide a completed PIC).
