About the Job:

Reporting to the program manager, the Peer Support Worker will have a passion for working with the community in one of our programs that provides housing and supports for individuals experiencing mental health and/or problematic substance abuse challenges and are at risk of homelessness.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Provide support and guidance in housing transitions, dispute resolution, and housing retention
- Promote healthy living
- Work collaboratively to set realistic goals which can be achieved through engagement in tenancy interventions and supports
- Safeguard all individuals and members throughout each experience, while upholding the philosophy of the Supportive Housing Program
- Work in partnership with various participating organizations to provide support in consultation with the participating staff members
- Assist individuals in developing empowerment skills and combating stigma through self-advocacy
- Understand and be able to integrate a philosophy of client-centred care into daily responsibilities
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to quality care and service delivery based on SHIP’s Mission and Values
- Ensure appropriate records are kept and make sure that statistical information is maintained as per agency standards
- Responsible for client/resident safety
- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

- Post-secondary education in Social Work, Social Services, Health Services, or equivalent
- Person with lived or living experience
- 2 years experience in a Peer Support role or equivalent
- Training in Peer Core Competencies
- Ability to advocate on behalf of clients and is comfortable with the self-help role
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi service team
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential




- Effective decision-making skills and ability to assess a comprehensive range of variables to be able to interpret analyze and solve problems
- Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity.
- A valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s license and a vehicle with adequate insurance coverage is required
- Valid certification in CPI, CPR, First Aid, and ASIST
- Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply

Reporting Function: The Peer Support Worker will report directly to the Program Manager. They will work with both internal and external partners and will interact with all levels within the organization.

They will be a support system, resource, and an advocator for the team and organization.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

- Hours are generally Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm but additional hours may be required
- Average amount of physical effort is required
- Requires the ability of handling light and moderate weight objects including office equipment and other office supplies
- Frequently sitting and/or standing for prolonged periods of time
- Vehicle travel to community sites
- Ability to walk up and open doors as required
