First Nation Healing Centre is a non-profit organization which is seeking a Recreation Worker . The Recreation worker will plan, organize, and lead a variety of internal activities and community outings for shelter residents. The primary goal is to promote social connection, build life skills, and improve the overall well-being of clients in a supportive, trauma-informed environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Planning & Execution
- Design monthly calendars of internal and external activities.
- Coordinate external outings including booking transport, securing tickets, and managing logistics.
- Lead group sessions directly, ensuring a welcoming, inclusive, and encouraging atmosphere.
- Assess client interests and feedback to continuously adapt and improve programming.
Client Support & Safety
- Apply trauma-informed care practices to support clients with diverse backgrounds and high needs.
- Manage risks during outings by conducting safety assessments and enforcing shelter boundaries.
- De-escalate conflicts calmly using crisis intervention and verbal de-escalation techniques.
- Encourage participation while respecting client autonomy and varying comfort levels.
Administration & Collaboration
- Manage program budgets for supplies, event admissions, and transportation costs.
- Maintain detailed logs of client attendance, engagement levels, and incident reports.
- Build community partnerships with local museums, parks,
and venues for free or discounted access.
- Collaborate with case managers to align activities with clients’ individual housing or goals.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: will accept High School Diploma, preferably relevant post secondary education or experience in related field.
- Experience working with vulnerable populations.
- Standard First Aid and CPR/AED.
- Crisis Prevention Intervention or Mental Health First Aid.
- Valid Driver’s License with a clean abstract (highly preferred for driving clients on outings).
- Skills: Robust conflict resolution, budgeting, cultural humility, and event planning abilities.

About
The Healing Centre will provide a safe environment, residency and will address the women’s and children’s physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual needs. Non-residential outreach with supportive counselling services will be provided to assist the males of our community.
