The Southern Alberta Adult Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition Program (SAAHEPNP) Registered Nurse (RN) works with adults in Southern Alberta who have chronic medical conditions that require them to be tube fed or intravenously fed. The position is based at the office and clinic at Foothills Medical Centre. The candidate needs to be comfortable with managing an extensive patient load through in person and virtual contact and in collaboration with care providers in the community.

Complete in-depth assessments for determination of eligibility; working with a multidisciplinary team to determine the best therapy. This position is essential to delivering and adapting teaching for patients and assessing their ability to be successful with either Parenteral (PN) or Enteral Nutrition (EN) at home. The nurse provides service to patients and their families/caregivers throughout their home therapy.

Actively participates in follow-up and consultation with the patient and their families, problem solving feeding device concerns, facilitating tube exchanges, and troubleshooting central line complications. Guides patients and families in ongoing self-care that requires technical and clinical expertise. Systematically documents all aspects of care in a concise and timely manner.

Participates in development, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care, policies, and guidelines as they affect patients on EN and PN. Collaborates with other professionals to plan, implement, and evaluate actions related to care of EN and PN with respect to efficiency, effectiveness, appropriateness, and safety. This position requires regular lifting, is physically demanding, includes on-call duties and travel to other AHS facilities usually within Calgary and within the scheduled hours.

This position involves working in the settings of inpatient acute care, ambulatory clinic visits, and office work.

communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance.

PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 to $55.79 per hour. Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Required Qualifications

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).

Current Basic Cardiac Life





Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification.

Additional Required Qualifications

5 years of recent (in the last 7 yr) acute care med/surg experience.

Experience with parenteral and enteral nutrition. Expertise in adult teaching and learning. Ability to use virtual methods of teaching and assessment. Competence in applying knowledge, skills, judgment and attributes required for safe, independent and inter-professional practice.

Competence in integrating reflection, critical thinking, education and experience to inform practice. Commitment to providing quality service that includes effective communication using a variety of approaches and purposeful collaboration to achieve care goals. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

Experience and expertise in various clinical information systems including Netcare and Connect Care. Microsoft and computer literacy.

Ability for: prolonged periods of standing, walking; assist patients with mobility issues; lift at least 30lb; operate a mechanical lift; frequent manual handling for total care patients; reach and bend for procedures such as central line care and tube exchanges, CPR. Excellent coordination and dexterity for nursing procedures including dressing changes, handling syringes, needles, IV bags, lines, and enteral devices. Vehicle & ability to travel to other hospitals within Calgary.

On-call and call-back on evenings, nights and weekends is part of the role once fully trained. Availability to complete extensive orientation within a reasonable period.

Preferred Qualifications

Baccalaureate Nursing Degree preferred. CVAD knowledge and expertise. Affiliation with any or all of the following is desirable: Canadian Intravenous Nurses Association, National Association of Vascular Access Networks, Intravenous Nurses Association or American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.
