Founded in 2003 and headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, Sirius is a registered APEGA corporation supported by a highly skilled technical team.

Position Summary The Senior Automation Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of PLC and SCADA-based control systems for Sirius's chemical injection and remote power products. This role leads automation projects from concept through commissioning, mentors junior engineers, and works closely with Product Development, Manufacturing, and Field Service to deliver reliable, safe, and field-ready control solutions for oil and gas customers.

Key Responsibilities

● Develop and maintain SCADA/HMI applications for real-time monitoring, alarming, and remote control of field equipment

● Lead automation design reviews and provide technical direction to junior and intermediate technical department team members

● Select and integrate instrumentation, sensors, and communication hardware (RTUs, radios, cellular/satellite telemetry) suited to remote, unmanned well-site environments

● Collaborate with Mechanical and Electrical Engineering to ensure control system designs meet CSA/APEGA standards and hazardous location (Class I Division 2) requirements

● Develop control narratives, I/O lists, wiring diagrams, and functional specifications

● Support factory acceptance testing (FAT), commissioning, and start-up at customer sites, including field travel as required

● Troubleshoot control system issues in the field and provide technical escalation support to the Service team

● Identify and drive continuous improvement opportunities in automation design standards, code libraries, and testing procedures

Qualifications

● Bachelor's degree or diploma in Electrical, Instrumentation, or Controls Engineering (or equivalent technical discipline)

● Registered, or eligible for registration, as a P.Eng. or C.E.T. with APEGA

● Minimum 5–7 years of experience in industrial automation, with direct PLC/SCADA programming experience

● Proven experience in the oil and gas or process industries; chemical injection or wellsite automation experience considered a strong asset

● Proficiency with major PLC platforms (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar) and SCADA/HMI software

● Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Ethernet/IP, DNP3)

● Familiarity with hazardous location classifications and relevant CSA/electrical code requirements

● Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to support field commissioning and service escalations

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical documentation

● Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel to customer sites, including remote field locations

Working Conditions

● Field visits may involve exposure to outdoor and remote-site conditions; appropriate PPE and safety training provided

● Occasional after-hours support may be required for time-sensitive commissioning or field escalations
