The team coordinates with other service providers on behalf of clients to simplify scheduling and ensure all work is completed efficiently. Cantec works closely with property management companies, self-managed stratas, and property owners to maintain secure, compliant buildings.

Position Overview:

A Sprinkler and Cross Connection Technician at Cantec Fire Alarms Ltd. is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and testing of sprinkler and standpipe systems and other related life safety systems within buildings, such as cross connection devices. This role requires a thorough understanding of the 2024 BC Fire Code, CAN/ULC-S536 standard, NFPA 25 and Cantec Fire Alarms' internal testing procedures as outlined in the “Technician Field Guide.” The technician is expected to maintain professionalism, punctuality, and attention to detail, ensuring that all safety systems are functioning correctly to protect building occupants.

Sprinkler & Cross Connection Technician Key Responsibilities:

1. Inspection, Maintenance, and Testing: Conduct thorough inspections, maintenance, and testing of sprinkler and standpipe systems and cross connection devices. This includes testing intervals such as quarterly, semi-annual, 3-year and 5-year inspections / tests per NFPA 25. Ability to cross train and understand the basic functions of fire alarm systems and ancillary life safety equipment within buildings.



Perform scheduled inspections with punctuality, arriving early to prepare and ensure all necessary equipment is on hand. Ensure that all inspections are completed on time, within the scope of your abilities, and in accordance with company standards and client expectations.
2. Compliance and Code Familiarity: Stay informed and up-to-date with the 2024 BC Fire Code, CAN/ULC-S536 standard, NFPA 25, and any other relevant regulations. Understand and apply Cantec Fire Alarms' internal testing methods as detailed in the “Technician Field Guide,” ensuring all procedures are followed accurately.
3. Report Completion and Documentation: Accurately and thoroughly complete inspection reports, ensuring all findings are documented and communicated clearly to clients and internal teams. Utilize available resources, including senior technicians and office support, to resolve complex issues and ensure high-quality service delivery.
4. Cross Connection (Backflow) Testing: Testing, maintenance and repair of cross connection devices throughout the CRD. Completion of electronic result submissions and accurately managing these devices within our service platform Service Trade.
5. Vehicle and Equipment Management: Maintain a clean, tidy, and well-organized company service van, free of idle stock, to reduce vehicle wear and tear and improve efficiency. Stock the service van on a weekly basis during scheduled load-ups, ensuring all necessary tools and materials are available for upcoming jobs.



Prepare for scheduled work by reviewing the job ahead of time, asking pertinent questions to clarify any ambiguities, and ensuring all necessary equipment is ready for both inspection and repair work.
6. Professional Representation: Act as the face of Cantec Fire Alarms Ltd., representing the company professionally during all client interactions and while performing services. Adhere to company standards in appearance and uniform. Foster a positive team culture by contributing to weekly technician meetings, sharing insights, and helping to improve existing standard operating procedures.
7. Problem Solving and Initiative: Take the initiative to solve problems on the job site by utilizing available resources, such as senior technicians and office staff, to find solutions to difficult or complex situations. Be proactive in looking ahead at your schedule, preparing for the week's work, and addressing any potential challenges before they arise.

Qualifications:

- Certification in fire alarm systems, such as CFAA (Canadian Fire Alarm Association), ASTTBC (Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia) or equivalent.
- Knowledge of the 2024 BC Fire Code, CAN/ULC-S536 (Fire Alarm Systems), NFPA 25 (Sprinkler Systems) and relevant life safety regulations.
- Cross Connection Certification through BCWWA
- Strong technical skills in fire alarm system inspection, testing, and maintenance.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, maintaining a high standard of professionalism.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Working Conditions:

- Primarily field-based, with travel to various client sites.
- May require occasional overtime or weekend work to meet client needs.
- Physical requirements include lifting, climbing ladders, and working on feet for extended periods.
