Job Summary
A&J; CPA is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Staff Accountant to join our public accounting team.
The successful candidate will support a portfolio of clients with bookkeeping, accounting, payroll, tax preparation, reconciliations, and year-end work. This role is ideal for someone who is organized, comfortable working with multiple client files, and interested in developing broader experience within a CPA firm environment.
You will work closely with senior accountants and partners while gaining exposure to a variety of industries and accounting engagements.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate accounting records and general ledger accounts for multiple clients.
- Perform monthly bank and credit card reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
- Process and review accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.
- Prepare adjusting entries, reconciliations, schedules, and supporting working papers.
- Assist with client payroll processing, including pay calculations, payroll remittances, Records of Employment, and year-end payroll reporting.
- Prepare T4, T4 Summary, T5, and other applicable information returns.
- Assist with the preparation of personal income tax returns (T1) and corporate income tax returns (T2).
- Prepare client files for year-end accounting and financial statement engagements.
- Assist with compilation, review, and audit engagements as required.
- Prepare financial schedules, spreadsheets, and supporting documentation for client files.
- Communicate with clients to obtain missing information and resolve routine accounting and payroll matters.
- Communicate with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) regarding client accounting, payroll, and tax matters when required.
- Review account balances and transactions to identify discrepancies and recommend necessary corrections.
- Maintain organized and complete electronic client files.
- Work closely with senior staff and partners to meet client deadlines and improve accounting processes.
- Perform other accounting, payroll, tax, and administrative duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
- Previous accounting or bookkeeping experience, preferably within a public accounting or qualified services environment.
- Strong understanding of bookkeeping, general ledger accounting, and account reconciliation.
- Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, and bank reconciliations.
- Experience preparing personal and/or corporate tax returns is an asset.
- Payroll processing experience and familiarity with Canadian payroll requirements are an asset.
- Exposure to audit, review, or compilation engagements is an asset.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate financial records.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple client files and competing deadlines.
- Robust written and verbal communication skills.
Software Skills
- Experience with QuickBooks Desktop and/or QuickBooks Online.
- Experience with CaseWare / CaseView is an asset.
- Experience with Canadian tax preparation software is an asset.
- Familiarity with Sage or Odoo is an asset.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills.

Pay: From $50,000.00 per year
