Reporting to the Supervisor, Stations, the Co-op Student will support experienced Substation Technicians in the maintenance, testing, inspection, and troubleshooting of electrical substation equipment while gaining practical utility industry experience.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Be familiar with all protected work practices as set out by IHSA, the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, and company standards and work in conformity thereto.
- Work alongside experienced Substation Technicians to gain practical hands-on experience in the operation, inspection, maintenance and construction of electrical substation equipment.
- Gain exposure to a variety of low, medium and high voltage electrical equipment and have the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a utility environment.
- Under the direct supervision and guidance of qualified personnel, the student will assist with planned maintenance activities, inspections, electrical testing, equipment troubleshooting, documentation and general substation activities.
- Assist with preventative and corrective maintenance activities.
- Assist in the maintenance and testing of power transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, disconnect switches, power fuses, lightning arresters,
and battery systems.
- Reading and interpreting electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams and equipment drawings.
- Perform routine housekeeping to maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Develop an understanding of utility work practices, safety procedures, switching and isolation practices, and work protection requirements.
- Understand and be familiar with isolation, and grounding and bonding techniques.
- Must understand and comply with Ontario Traffic Manual, Field Book 7, IHSA, OHSA, Reg. 22/04, and other policies and procedures.
- Travel to other areas within Elexicon’s jurisdiction to respond to emergency trouble calls and substation alarms.
- Other duties as required may be considered part of these responsibilities.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL
- Demonstrated interest in electrical power systems and the electrical utility industry.
- Strong willingness to learn and accept direction from experienced personnel.
- Good communication and organizational skills.
- Good knowledge of safety rules and secure work practices
- Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude.
- Ability to work around energized electrical equipment while maintaining strict safety practices.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Applicants must be enrolled in Electrical Engineering Technology or related college program.
- Eligible for a recognized co-op education work term.
- Applicants must possess knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
- The applicant must be First Aid, CPR and AED certified.
- Knowledge of WHIMIS, Ontario Traffic Manual, Field Book 7, IHSA, OHSA, Reg. 22/04
- Working at Heights Training.
- Applicants must possess a valid G Ontario Driver’s License in good standing.

Compensation Package: Hourly rate of $23.56 + OMERS Pension Plan The above range reflects the reasonable estimate for the position at the time of posting. Within the range, hiring compensation will be determined based on relevant qualifications, experience, skillset, education/ training, and other organizational needs.
