Transfer Station Operations Manager
Location: Sarnia, ON

Reports To: General Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time
Compensation: $80,000 – $95,000
Bonus: 10% discretionary bonus

Position Summary
We are seeking a Transfer Station Operations Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of our transfer station in Sarnia, Ontario. The successful candidate will lead a team of four employees, including one Scale Operator and three Operators, while ensuring the facility operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all applicable regulatory and company requirements. This is a hands-on operational leadership role suited to an experienced waste industry professional who can effectively balance team leadership, facility operations, safety, productivity, environmental compliance, and business growth.
The successful candidate will also contribute to the marketing and growth of Transco, helping identify opportunities to strengthen customer relationships and expand the business.
Key Responsibilities
Transfer Station Operations
- Oversee the daily operation of the transfer station, ensuring safe and efficient operations.
- Lead and coordinate a team of four employees: one Scale Operator and three Operators.
- Maintain a strong presence on the floor and in the yard, actively monitoring daily operations.
- Step into operational duties and provide hands-on support to the team when required.
- Assist with equipment operation, scale activities, material movement, and other operational tasks as needed.
- Monitor site workflow, incoming and outgoing material, and overall facility performance.
- Coordinate the movement, loading, unloading, and transfer of materials through the facility.
- Ensure equipment and operational resources are used efficiently.
- Identify and resolve operational issues to minimize downtime and service disruptions.
- Work closely with drivers, dispatch, maintenance, and regional operations teams to address operational issues and maintain service levels.
Team Leadership
- Provide day-to-day leadership, direction, and support to the site team.
- Train, coach, and develop employees on secure work practices, operating procedures, and company expectations.
- Monitor employee performance, productivity, attendance, and compliance with company policies.
- Conduct toolbox talks and reinforce safety expectations.
- Address operational and performance issues promptly and escalate matters when appropriate.
- Support the team directly during periods of increased workload or when additional operational assistance is required.
Compliance & Regulatory Responsibilities
- Ensure the transfer station operates in accordance with applicable provincial, municipal, environmental, health and safety, and company requirements.
- Ensure waste materials are properly received, handled, stored, transferred, and documented.
- Monitor incoming materials and identify prohibited, unacceptable, or potentially hazardous materials.
- Ensure required site records, logs, inspections, manifests, and operational documentation are completed accurately and maintained.
- Conduct required inspections and follow up on deficiencies.
- Support regulatory inspections and audits as required.
- Identify environmental, safety, and compliance risks and take appropriate corrective action.
- Ensure spills, environmental incidents, equipment incidents, and other operational events are reported and managed in accordance with company procedures.
Safety & Equipment
- Promote and maintain a strong safety culture across the facility.
- Ensure employees follow company safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Conduct site inspections and address hazards or unsafe conditions.
- Ensure appropriate PPE is worn and safety procedures are followed.
- Investigate and report incidents, near misses, and safety concerns.
- Monitor the condition and operation of site equipment and identify maintenance requirements.
- Coordinate with the Maintenance team regarding preventative maintenance and equipment repairs.
- Ensure equipment is operated safely and appropriately.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe facility.
Business Growth & Marketing
- Support the ongoing growth and development of Transco's operations and customer base.
- Identify opportunities to improve service offerings, operational efficiency, and customer relationships.
- Collaborate with leadership and commercial teams on business development and growth initiatives.
- Represent Transco professionally with customers, vendors, transportation partners, and other external stakeholders.
- Support marketing initiatives and promote Transco's services and capabilities within the market.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with key customers and industry partners.
Administration, Reporting & U.S. Operations
- Complete daily operational reports, production records, inspection documentation, and other required paperwork.
- Monitor site volumes, productivity, staffing, equipment utilization, and operational performance.
- Track and communicate operational issues and corrective actions.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and cost-control initiatives as required.
- Maintain accurate employee, equipment, and site records.
- Communicate regularly with the General Manager regarding site performance, staffing, safety, compliance, growth opportunities, and operational concerns.
- Travel to U.S. landfills and other facilities,
as required, to support operations and maintain robust relationships with U.S. disposal partners.
- Ability to travel into the United States is preferred, particularly as Transco works with U.S. landfills and disposal facilities.
Qualifications & Experience
- 3–5+ years of progressive experience within the waste, environmental services, recycling, transfer station, landfill, or related industry.
- Previous experience supervising or leading employees in an operational environment.
- Direct experience working in or managing a waste transfer station is strongly preferred.
- Robust understanding of the operational, environmental, and compliance requirements associated with waste management facilities.
- Experience with workplace health and safety requirements.
- Equipment operation experience is strongly preferred.
- AZ license is preferred.
- Ability and willingness to remain hands-on and step into operational duties when required.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to travel into the United States is preferred.
- Ability to work outdoors and in a physically demanding industrial environment.
