Our client is seeking a Workday Functional Consultant / Project Lead that will provide hands-on functional expertise across a variety of HR technology initiatives, supporting both project delivery and ongoing system optimization. The role will lead and execute Workday-related projects such as new legal entity implementations, organizational restructures, union setup and maintenance, business process changes, acquisitions, divestitures, and other configuration initiatives.
In addition to project work, the consultant may support day-to-day HRIS sustainment activities, troubleshoot complex issues, identify opportunities for process and system improvements, and help establish scalable solutions aligned with evolving business requirements. The ideal candidate is a seasoned Workday practitioner with broad cross-functional knowledge who can operate independently while partnering effectively with HR, Payroll, Finance, Digital, and business stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Project Delivery & Functional Leadership
· Lead the functional design, configuration, testing, and deployment of Workday-related projects.
· Configure and support organizational changes, including new legal entities, union and collective agreement setup, company and organizational restructures, supervisory organization changes, security and role updates, and business process enhancements.
· Gather and document business requirements and translate them into scalable Workday solutions.
· Conduct fit-gap analysis and provide recommendations aligned with Workday leading practices.
· Develop and execute testing strategies, test scenarios, and validation activities.
· Support deployment planning, cutover activities, and post-production hypercare.
HRIS Sustainment & Operational Support
· Provide support for complex Workday issues and production incidents.
· Investigate root causes and recommend sustainable corrective actions.
· Partner with HRIS team members to maintain system stability, data integrity, and operational effectiveness.
· Support Workday releases, feature evaluations, regression testing, and deployment activities.
· Assist with reporting, security, integrations, and business process troubleshooting as required.
Continuous Improvement
· Identify opportunities to streamline processes, reduce manual effort, and improve the user experience.
· Assess current-state processes and recommend practical future-state improvements.
· Document business requirements, process flows, solution designs, configuration decisions, and operational procedures.
· Advise on governance, configuration standards, and Workday leading practices.
· Support the development of scalable support models and operational efficiencies across the HR technology landscape.
Stakeholder Engagement
· Partner with HR, Payroll, Finance, Digital, and business leaders to understand evolving requirements.
· Facilitate workshops and working sessions to gather requirements, evaluate options, and build consensus.
· Communicate project status, risks, dependencies,
decisions, and recommendations to stakeholders.
· Act as a trusted advisor for Workday-related design and operational decisions.
Required Qualifications
· Five or more years of Workday functional experience across one or more modules, including Core HCM, Payroll, Time Tracking, Absence, Compensation, Recruiting, Benefits, or Security.
· Proven experience leading Workday projects and configuration initiatives from requirements through deployment.
· Experience supporting organizational changes such as legal entity implementations, acquisitions, divestitures, restructures, or unionized workforces.
· Strong understanding of Workday business processes, security framework, reporting, and data structures.
· Experience developing test plans, executing testing, managing defects, and supporting deployments.
· Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex issues, identify root causes, and implement sustainable solutions.
· Strong documentation, communication, facilitation, and stakeholder management skills.
· Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and manage multiple priorities in a rapid-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience within energy, utilities, manufacturing, or another highly regulated industry.
· Workday certifications in one or more functional areas; experience with Workday Payroll, Time Tracking, and Absence.
· Experience supporting HR technology roadmaps, governance, release management, and continuous improvement initiatives.
· Experience working with third-party implementation partners, vendors, and cross-functional delivery teams.
