Humans of HR is partnering with a growing Canadian organization to find an Assistant Controller to join its finance leadership team.

This is a great opportunity for a CPA who has progressed beyond traditional accounting and wants to play a bigger role in the business. You’ll work closely with the Controller and operational leadership, oversee a team, and help bring greater structure, efficiency, and insight to the organization’s financial operations.

The ideal candidate is someone who is equally comfortable reviewing financials, leading people, solving problems, and getting into the business to understand what is actually driving the numbers.

What You'll Be Doing

- Take ownership of the accounting and financial activities for a group of business operations.
- Drive the monthly reporting cycle and ensure leadership has accurate, timely information to work with.
- Review financial results, investigate variances, and turn the numbers into clear business recommendations.
- Partner with leaders outside of Finance to understand performance, identify challenges, and support better decision-making.
- Lead and develop a team of accounting professionals.
- Work alongside the Controller on forecasting, annual planning, audits, and broader financial initiatives.
- Look for better ways to do things — improving reporting, reducing manual work, strengthening processes, and making better use of technology.




- Provide oversight across core accounting functions, including payables, receivables, reconciliations, and financial controls.
- Become a trusted resource for operational leaders by developing a strong understanding of how the business works.
- Support the Controller with priorities, projects, problem-solving, and day-to-day leadership of the finance function.
- Get involved in projects and analysis that go beyond the regular month-end cycle.

What You'll Bring

- CPA designation and a degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline.
- 6+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Previous experience managing, mentoring, or leading accounting professionals.
- Strong technical accounting and financial reporting capabilities.
- Experience working with budgets, forecasts, reconciliations, audits, and month-end processes.
- Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with accounting/ERP systems.
- A demonstrated interest in improving processes and using technology to make Finance more efficient.
- Solid commercial awareness and the ability to connect financial results to operational performance.
- Confidence working with senior leaders and stakeholders outside of Finance.
- A hands-on leadership style, with the ability to balance strategic priorities with getting into the details when needed.
- Strong judgment, organization, communication, and problem-solving skills.
