Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, Intergovernmental Affairs, the Director, Sustainable Development is responsible for overseeing the strategic planning, development, management, and integration of government policies and programs supporting sustainable resource development in Nunavut. The incumbent assists in the overall development and coordination of Government of Nunavut (GN) positions and interests regarding land use plans, environmental assessment review processes, and related assessments with Institutions of Public Government (IPGs). This position leads and coordinates interdepartmental reviews, often serving as the lead author of GN submissions and representing the government in engagement with communities, IPGs, and regulators on resource development issues.

Responsibilities The key responsibilities of the Director, Sustainable Development include but are not limited to:

- Provide advice on technical reviews of proposed land use plans to identify issues related to implementation, evaluate technical merits, assess inconsistencies, and ensure GN concerns are addressed with federal agencies, Inuit organizations, and IPGs.
- Coordinate environmental assessments and technical reviews of proposed projects within Nunavut, including projects outside the territory with potential transboundary impacts, and justify technical merits of project proposals.
- Provide secretarial support, coordinate, and co-chair activities of the Sustainable Development Advisory Group (SDAG)



and support the deputy minister-level Sustainable Development Committee (SDC).
- Coordinate the development of GN positions and negotiating strategies regarding environmental assessments, land use planning, policy, and amendments of resource management legislation with the federal government, Inuit organizations, and IPGs.
- Advise departments to seek expert technical opinion as necessary, including contracting external expertise, developing Terms of Reference (TORs), and preparing Financial Management Board (FMB) submissions for approval.
- Communicate regularly and provide advice, briefings, ministerial briefing notes, and requests for executive council decisions to deputy ministers, the ADM, and senior GN officials on the status of project reviews, public hearings, negotiations, and research results.
- Supervise divisional staff, direct contracted technical expertise, and oversee operational planning, resource allocation, and program accountability.

Qualifications The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized undergraduate degree in environmental studies, social sciences, or a related field, combined with five (5) years of relevant professional experience in a related field, including at least three (3) years of those years in a management or supervisory role. This is a Position of Trust, and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural setting are also considered assets.
