Summary
Reporting to the Director of Engineering and Estimation, the Lead Mechanical Designer is responsible for leading the mechanical design activities for assigned projects from concept through manufacturing. The Lead Mechanical Designer will develop detailed models, manufacturing drawings, and manufacturing plans while ensuring designs meet project requirements, applicable engineering principles, manufacturing capabilities, quality standards, and company standards.
In addition to completing design work, the Lead Mechanical Designer will provide technical direction, drawing review, and mentorship to other designers. The position will work closely with Engineering, Estimation, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and clients to resolve technical issues and ensure projects progress efficiently from design through production. This position will work closely with the current Lead Mechanical Designer to develop advanced technical and leadership capabilities, with the long-term objective of progressing into an Engineering Manager role.
Primary Responsibilities
Design & Engineering
- Lead the mechanical design and detailing of assigned projects, including heavy mechanical structures, conveyors, hoppers, chutes, ramps, and bulk material handling systems.
- Create and review 3D models, fabrication and assembly drawings, layouts, and documentation from customer drawings, models, specifications, and site measurements.
- Create burning, forming, machining, and fabrication templates.
- Identify design risks, constructability issues, and opportunities for cost, quality, and manufacturing improvements.
- Ensure designs consider manufacturability, assembly, installation, and maintenance.
- Support the development of design concepts and preliminary layouts during estimating and project development.
- Establish and maintain drawing and modeling standards.
- Ensure designs comply with project specifications, applicable codes, company standards, and established engineering practices.
- Support the continuous improvement of design processes, and standards.
Technical Leadership
- Provide day-to-day technical guidance and mentorship to mechanical designers.
- Assist designers in resolving complex design and engineering problems.
- Serve as a technical resource for the Engineering and Manufacturing teams.
- Help establish priorities and coordinate design activities across multiple projects.
- Support the Director and current Lead Designer in allocating design resources based on project requirements and deadlines.
- Lead project kickoffs,
design reviews, and technical meetings. Manufacturing & Project Support
- Communicate design and manufacturing requirements to shop, purchasing, and project management teams.
- Provide mechanical engineering and technical support to manufacturing operations.
- Work directly with manufacturing personnel to resolve fabrication, assembly, and installation issues.
- Review and implement approved design changes.
- Ensure changes are properly documented and communicated to affected departments.
- Participate in site measurements, inspections, commissioning, and troubleshooting as required.
- Communicate directly with customers and vendors regarding technical and design matters.
Future Leadership Development
- Work with the Director and Lead Designer to develop leadership, project management, and people-management skills.
- Participate in resource planning, workload forecasting, and project scheduling.
- Assist with establishing department goals, KPIs, processes, and performance standards.
- Participate in interviewing, onboarding, training, and development of design team members.
- Identify opportunities to improve engineering department efficiency, quality, and capacity.
- Gradually assume additional leadership responsibilities as demonstrated through performance and experience.
Qualifications
Required
- 7–10 years of experience designing heavy mechanical equipment and structures, preferably including conveyors, bulk material handling systems, hoppers, chutes, ramps, and related industrial equipment.
- 5 years of Autodesk Inventor experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Robust AutoCAD experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated ability to produce accurate, detailed models and manufacturing drawings within project schedules.
- Strong understanding of fabrication, machining, welding, assembly, and manufacturing processes.
- Strong understanding of mechanical and structural design principles.
- Demonstrated ability to review and critique engineering drawings and designs.
- Strong verbal and written English communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently while also providing direction and support to other team members.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Mechanical Design certification, diploma, or equivalent technical education/experience.
Assets
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- P.Eng. designation or eligibility is an asset. Equivalent combinations of education and practical experience will be considered.
- Experience leading or mentoring other designers.
- Experience coordinating multiple projects or design resources.
- Experience working directly with customers and vendors.
- Experience with Autodesk Vault or other document-management/PDM systems.
- Programming or automation experience related to Autodesk products.
- Experience developing CAD standards, templates, libraries, or design automation.
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems and manufacturing workflows.

First 6 months

- Builds strong relationships with Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Project Management.
- Becomes a reliable technical resource for the design team.
6–18 months
- Independently leads complex design projects.
- Reviews and approves work from other designers.
- Begins mentoring junior and intermediate designers.
- Identifies and implements improvements to design standards and processes.
- Takes increasing responsibility for coordinating design workload and priorities.
18 months
- Functions as a senior technical leader within the Engineering department.
- Develops and supports other designers.
- Participates in resource planning, hiring, training, and performance development.
- Takes ownership of engineering processes and department-level improvements.
- Demonstrates the leadership, communication, organization, and business judgment required to progress toward Engineering Manager.

Pay: $100,000.00-$125,000.00 per year
