About Viala Technologies
Viala Technologies is a Victoria-based engineering and manufacturing company specializing in custom machinery, automation, prototyping, and advanced manufacturing.
Our shop includes CNC and manual machining, 3D printing, laser cutting, fabrication, mechanical assembly, and other manufacturing processes. Because we build custom equipment and components, the work is varied and often involves solving practical manufacturing and assembly problems.
We are looking for a hands-on Mechanical Technologist / Manufacturing Technician to join our team full time.
The Role
This is a practical, shop-focused position for someone who enjoys building things, working with machinery, and developing a broad range of manufacturing skills.
A significant part of the role will involve CNC machining. The successful candidate will be trained to operate our CNC milling machines and, as their skills develop, will also learn machine setup and CAM programming.
The position is broader than CNC machining alone. Depending on production requirements, the successful candidate may also perform manual machining, mechanical assembly, fabrication, metal finishing, equipment maintenance, inspection, and other manufacturing work.
This role would be well suited to a Mechanical Engineering Technologist, recent technology graduate, or mechanically capable manufacturing technician who wants to develop strong hands-on manufacturing skills.
Responsibilities
- Operate CNC milling machines
- Learn CNC machine setup, tooling, workholding, and machining practices
- Learn CAM programming and toolpath development
- Occasionally design parts
- Produce components from engineering drawings and work instructions
- Inspect machined parts using calipers, micrometers, and other measuring equipment
- Operate manual mills, lathes, drills, saws,
and other machine tools
- Perform drilling, tapping, fitting, rework, and general manual machining
- Assist with mechanical machine assembly
- Deburr, clean, and finish machined and fabricated components
- Perform general fabrication and metalworking tasks
- Assist with fixtures, jigs, and manufacturing improvements
- Troubleshoot basic manufacturing and assembly problems
- Operate other manufacturing equipment as trained
- Perform routine equipment and shop maintenance
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
- Assist with other production activities as required
Training and Development We do not expect the successful candidate to already be an experienced CNC programmer or machinist.
Training will be provided in areas such as:
- CNC machine operation
- CNC setup and workholding
- Tool selection and machining practices
- CAM programming
- CNC toolpath development
- Part inspection and measurement
- Manual machining
- Manufacturing processes used throughout our shop
As experience develops, there will be opportunities to take on more independent machining, programming, process improvement, troubleshooting, and manufacturing responsibilities. Experience with Fusion 360 is an asset but is not required.
Qualifications
Ideal candidates will have some combination of:
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Machining, or a related field
- Hands-on mechanical or manufacturing experience
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings
- Positive mechanical aptitude
- Experience using mills, lathes, or other machine tools
- Familiarity with measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers
- CAD experience
- Experience with Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or similar software
- Experience with fabrication, machine assembly, or metalworking
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Good attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Willingness to perform a variety of hands-on manufacturing tasks
Previous CNC experience is an asset but is not required for a mechanically capable candidate who is interested in learning.
Schedule
This is a full-time position, approximately 36-40 hours per week.
Our normal working schedule is Monday through Friday. Some flexibility in scheduling may be possible depending on production requirements and the candidate.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for someone who is hands-on, mechanically capable, curious, and adaptable.
This is not primarily a desk-based engineering position. The successful candidate should enjoy working in a manufacturing environment and be comfortable spending much of their time operating equipment, machining parts, assembling machinery, troubleshooting problems, and physically building things.
For someone early in their career, this position offers an opportunity to develop practical skills in CNC machining, CAM programming, manual machining, machine building, fabrication, and advanced manufacturing while working on a wide variety of custom projects.
Please include a portfolio of past work in your application.
Pay: $25.00-$32.00 per hour
Expected hours: 36.0 – 40.0 per week
Work Location: In person
