Personal Support Worker - Lawrence Park, Toronto - CAD$216.00/week

Description

About the Client:

We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a 78-year-old gentleman living with dementia in North Toronto. He was diagnosed with aphasia approximately one year ago and is no longer verbal, though he remains mobile and calm-natured. His wife, who is in excellent health, has been his primary caregiver but now needs respite support to maintain her own wellbeing. This is a private, mild-mannered household where the client enjoys going for drives and maintaining his daily routines.

Responsibilities:

Your primary role will be providing supervision and companionship while the client's wife attends to errands, appointments, or personal time with friends. You'll help the client move safely around the home, including assistance with stairs as the bathroom is currently being retrofitted for accessibility. Light support with daily activities and accompanying him on short drives or to appointments may be needed.

You'll serve as an extra set of eyes for safety monitoring and provide reassurance through your calm presence. The family may also appreciate help referencing medication schedules from their care book, though you won't be administering medications.

What We're Looking For:

We need someone with demonstrated experience in dementia care who understands the unique needs of clients with aphasia and cognitive decline. You should be patient, calm, and able to communicate effectively with both verbal and non-verbal clients. The ideal caregiver brings positive energy, takes initiative when needed, and respects the client's independence and dignity.

Reliability and consistency are essential, as is the ability to make the client feel comfortable in his own home. A valid driver's license and reliable transportation are required for appointment accompaniment. English fluency is necessary for clear communication with the family.

Schedule:

This position requires 2-3 visits per week, with each shift lasting 3-4 hours. The schedule is adaptable regarding specific times and can be adjusted between morning and afternoon hours to accommodate both family needs and caregiver availability. Consistency in weekly scheduling is important to establish routine and trust.
