Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time, overseeing and evolving Ontario’s electricity market, engaging with government, municipalities and Indigenous communities, and planning for Ontario’s future electricity needs. The successful candidate will Conduct engineering studies and analysis to resolve inquiries and support real-time operations. In this role, you’ll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through: Conducting studies and analysis in the field of power system operation in areas such as: Operating Security Limits (all time frames); outage (transmission and resource) assessment and support; ancillary service requirements; supply adequacy, security and operability; joint operating and/or planning studies; new or modified power system facilities and connections to the IESO-controlled grid; NERC/NPCC reliability standards compliance and support; equipment performance and model validation; developing and managing online and off-line models used by security and market software; mentoring and assisting training of new and/or junior staff; supporting real-time operations use of operating instructions and the accuracy of security software results ~ Receive assignment from the Sr Power System Engineer, Engineering Supervisor, Engineering Manager, and/or Senior Manager in general terms on specific problems related to assigned areas of work.

Obtain necessary data for problem solution.

Perform Ontario Model

Build (OMB) activities integrating new and modified elements into the Online model as implementer and/or reviewer Perform other tasks related to the OMB process, including but not limited to OMB coordination,



display coordination, delivering operating instructions to the control room, preparing bulk files, maintaining the thermal limit monitoring, network security analysis (NSA) and Operations Training Simulator (OTS) and performing Remedial Action Scheme updates/modifications. Perform real-time support of RTA supported applications. Represent RTA and participate in capital projects as assigned.

Support IESO security, adequacy and operability obligations found in the Market Rules and in applicable NERC and NPCC reliability standards. Support the preparation and delivery of reliability compliance evidence, including work procedures, RSAWs, market manuals, training material and participation in reliability audits Participate in task forces, as well as internal/external committees on matters related to the secure and economic operation of the IESO-controlled-grid. Participate as assigned, as a representative of the IESO before regulatory agencies, etc.

Supply a consultative service to other departments and/or business units on matters related to adequacy, security and operability. Mentor and assist training of recent and/or junior staff Exercise limited/periodic supervision over assigned staff on special projects. On occasion, sign or sign and seal documents as a P Eng. for peer review, or to assume professional engineering responsibility for engineering work performed by unlicensed staff.

A typical day in this role focuses on supporting real-time grid operations by analyzing system conditions, validating operating limits, and ensuring the accuracy of models and security tools used by control room staff. The engineer reviews outages, transfer capabilities, and supply adequacy in near real time, helping confirm that the day-ahead plan remains reliable and identifying any emerging risks to system security. Throughout the day, they also document findings, provide recommendations, and may mentor junior staff while supporting ongoing studies and operational decision-making.

Requires engineering knowledge of electrical theory, power system analysis and control, mathematics, computers science and the like to conduct engineering, economic or analytical studies related to the management and control of the bulk power system. Requires knowledge of technical writing to prepare effective reports.



This knowledge is acquired through the completion of an engineering/applied sciences degree from an accredited university or by having the equivalent education.

Requires a licence to engage in the practice professional engineering in Ontario and be competent in the field of electrical engineering. Requires lengthy exposure to the overall power system operation through progressive training in an appropriate technical field.

Experience will be related to the fields of: electrical engineering design concepts as they relate to the functions and characteristics of power system components analytical studies and the application of computer techniques to solve power system problems familiarity with power system operation, practices, and policies familiarity with electric energy and transmission rights market operations, practices, policies, and Market Rules proficient with high-tension transmission, system interconnection and methods of attaining efficiency in power production and interchange between systems Candidates with lesser qualifications will be considered as a Power System Engineering Analyst.
