To support this continued growth, our client is seeking an experienced Purchasing Manager to lead its established purchasing function and team of buyers. JOB SUMMARY The Purchasing Manager will oversee a team of buyers and a multi-million-dollar purchasing portfolio, providing leadership across sourcing, supplier management, inventory, and purchasing activities. The role will establish procurement strategies that support company objectives while balancing cost, availability, inventory, and service requirements. Working closely with senior leadership and cross-functional teams, the Purchasing Manager will strengthen supplier partnerships, resolve complex purchasing matters, and identify opportunities to improve procurement processes and performance.
The role may also retain direct purchasing responsibility for designated product categories.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead, coach, and mentor the purchasing team,
effectively balancing workloads and product portfolios while managing performance and serving as the first point of escalation for purchasing issues.
- Foster a high-performing team environment and provide backup support to buyers and leadership as required.
- Develop and execute purchasing strategies aligned with business priorities, market conditions, and customer requirements.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers through forecasting, joint planning, and ongoing performance management.
- Monitor supplier performance and lead initiatives related to pricing, quality, reliability, lead times, negotiations, purchasing volumes, and rebate opportunities.
- Manage supplier-related issues, including non-conforming materials, RMAs, and the evaluation and qualification of new suppliers.
- Execute inventory planning strategies, maintain appropriate stock levels, and work with Sales and other stakeholders on stocking requirements and demand forecasting.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve inventory productivity, including reducing excess, slow-moving, and obsolete inventory.
- Oversee purchase order activity and supplier commitments, ensuring proper approvals, timely updates, and appropriate expedites, delays, cancellations, transfers, and other transactions.
- Partner with Sales, Finance, IT, and other internal stakeholders to align purchasing decisions with business needs and provide timely updates on supplier and market developments.
- Maintain accurate product and supplier information within the ERP system and provide reporting on pricing trends, supplier performance, lead times, inventory, service levels, and other procurement metrics.
- Drive continuous improvement across procurement and supply chain processes, systems, reporting, and tools, collaborating with IT and internal teams to improve efficiency and decision-making.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree in Materials Management, Procurement, Business Administration, Operations, or a related discipline.
- 10+ years of progressive procurement experience, ideally within a distribution, electrical, wire & cable, or related setting.
- Strong expertise in strategic sourcing, supplier relationship management, purchasing, inventory planning, and commercial negotiations.
- Proven track record of leading, coaching, mentoring, and developing a purchasing team, including performance management and team development.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Access, and Power BI, along with experience using ERP systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated capacity to interpret procurement and inventory data and translate insights into effective business decisions.
- Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills, with a proven track record of collaborating with and influencing stakeholders across the organization and supplier network.
- Highly organized, with strong prioritization, time-management, and follow-through skills, and comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Professional and collaborative approach, with a solid focus on business objectives, service excellence, and continuous improvement.
