Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) – Family Medicine Practice Position Overview

We are seeking a compassionate, experienced and highly organized Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) to join our family medicine practice. The successful candidate will play an integral role in providing high-quality patient care and supporting our physicians and clinical team.

The RPN will be responsible for a variety of clinical and patient-care activities, including patient communication, telephone follow-up, triage, immunizations, injections, wound care and other medical procedures. The position also involves supporting the day-to-day clinical operations of the practice.

The successful candidate must have a strong knowledge of primary care nursing and be able to work both independently and collaboratively within a physician-led team setting. Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills are essential.

Roles and Responsibilities

Patient Communication and Support

- Communicate information and instructions to patients as directed by physicians.
- Conduct systematic follow-up telephone calls to support patient care and ongoing health needs.
- Respond to patient questions within the RPN's scope of practice and escalate concerns to the appropriate physician when required.
- Provide patient education and support regarding health management, treatments and preventive care.

Patient Care and Clinical Responsibilities
- Assess and triage patients according to the acuity and nature of their presenting concerns, within the RPN's scope of practice.
- Perform clinical procedures including:
- Immunizations and injections
- Urinalysis and other point-of-care testing
- Wound care and dressings
- Ear irrigation/ear cleaning
- MOCA Testing




- Other procedures as directed and within the RPN's scope of practice
- Perform newborn measurements, including height, weight and head circumference.
- Assist physicians with procedures and examinations as required.
- Monitor and document patient care accurately in the EMR.
- Maintain appropriate infection prevention and control practices.
- Clean, disinfect and sterilize medical instruments according to established protocols.
- Recognize changes in a patient's condition and communicate concerns promptly to the physician or appropriate member of the clinical team.

Vaccine Management
- Manage public and privately purchased vaccines.
- Maintain vaccine storage and handling in accordance with applicable public health requirements.
- Monitor and maintain vaccine refrigerator temperatures and records.
- Order and receive vaccines and maintain appropriate inventory levels.
- Maintain accurate vaccine inventory records.
- Coordinate and process private vaccine billing where applicable.
- Ensure appropriate documentation of vaccines administered.

Clinical and Office Support
- Maintain and monitor inventory of medical and laboratory supplies and place orders as required.
- Process incoming and outgoing medical documentation, including faxing and scanning through the EMR.
- Schedule and coordinate patient appointments as required.
- Answer and direct patient telephone calls.




- Assist with the smooth and efficient operation of the clinical office.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all applicable privacy and professional standards.

Qualifications and Requirements
- Registered Practical Nursing diploma from an accredited/recognized nursing program.
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), with no restrictions that would prevent the candidate from performing the duties of the position.
- Minimum 2 years of direct patient-care experience; experience in family medicine or primary care is strongly preferred.
- Current CPR/BLS certification.
- Current professional liability coverage as required by the CNO and the employer.
- Experience with an EMR system is preferred.
- Experience with immunization programs, vaccine management and primary care procedures is an asset.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Permanent Pay: $24.00-$26.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30.0 per week
