Canadian Poultry Consultants (CPC) is seeking an energetic and resourceful full-time RVT to join our poultry practice in Abbotsford, BC. We are an internationally renowned specialized poultry practice providing veterinary expertise and poultry-related research to all sectors of the commercial poultry industry including hatcheries, feed mills, processors, allied trades, marketing boards and government. Our client base includes broiler, turkey, layer, broiler breeder, organic and specialty poultry producers, as well as select small flock owners.

Duties & Responsibilities

· Support the practice philosophy of exemplary customer service, safe & wholesome food production, and animal welfare

· Interact directly with clients in a compassionate and professional manner

· Obtain relevant case histories

· Manage submission forms, lab reports and medical records

· Perform client callbacks and updates

· Dispense vaccines and medications as prescribed by the vets

· Assist in farm service calls

· Take blood samples from a variety of species of poultry

· Prepare medical specimens and paperwork for submission to external labs

· Provide support to staff veterinarians by assisting in performing investigative necropsies (preparing specimens, note-taking, clean-up and sanitization)

· Perform humane euthanasia of cull birds

· Maintain inventory, equipment, and instruments in the necropsy suite

· Monitor and maintain inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment, and supplies

· Assist in the delivery of poultry production continuing education programs for clients

· Be familiar with, and practice,



the principles of biosecurity

· Perform other duties as assigned

Skills & Abilities The ideal candidate should be organized, self-motivated, have a strong work ethic and be committed to continuous learning and improvement. The ability to work independently and as part of a energetic team is vital.

· Willingness to receive direction and guidance from the CPC professional staff

· Strong client skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills

· Mastery of multi-tasking and working under deadlines

· Proficiency in Word and Excel

· Dedication to promoting animal welfare

· Strong understanding of the principles of biosecurity and disease transmission

· Willing to learn about relevant poultry health issues

· Knowledgeable in the principles and performance of humane euthanasia for poultry

· Can efficiently prepare avian necropsy specimens

· Familiarity with the use of a microscope

· Can work under pressure

· Ability to foster a positive work environment

Physical Demands

· The essential functions of this position require a moderate degree of physical activity that includes standing, balancing, bending, kneeling or crouching, and lifting (up to 20kg)

· Vision ability includes close and distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and focus adjustment

· Candidate must be comfortable with donning,



doffing and working in personal protective equipment (mask, coveralls, booties, gloves), sometimes for long periods and in hot conditions

· Candidate must be able to work safely with sharp bladed instruments

· Exposure to unpleasant odours and allergens

Work Location:

· CPC main office, Abbotsford, BC

· Will need to reliably commute

· There is no provision for remote work for this position

Office Hours:

· Monday to Friday, 8:30-4:30pm, 37.5 hour work week

· Very limited emergency on call

Salary & Benefits

Starting salary will be commensurate with credentials and experience.

Salary range: $32-$35 per hour

Education

· Post-secondary degree in applied science, veterinary technology or agriculture, is preferred

· Must be an RVT member in good standing with the BCVTA

Experience

· Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a veterinary practice. Livestock and food production animals is preferred

· Livestock farming and/or poultry experience is an asset
