ROUTE SETTER — VOLUME CLIMBING
Edmonton, Alberta | Part-Time / Full-Time Opportunities
Volume Climbing is building its route setting team.
We’re a new bouldering gym opening in Edmonton, and we’re looking for creative, motivated climbers who want to be part of building something from the ground up.
Route setting is at the heart of what we want Volume to be. Our goal is to create a setting program that is varied, thoughtful, challenging and fun — with climbs for everyone from first-time climbers to high-level athletes.
You don’t need to be the strongest climber in the room, and you don’t need years of professional setting experience. We care about creativity, work ethic, coachability, movement knowledge, and being a great person to work with.
THE ROLE
As part of the Volume setting team, you’ll work alongside our Head Route Setter and senior setting staff to:
- Set boulders across a wide range of grades, styles and movement types
- Participate in regular wall resets
- Strip, wash, organize and maintain holds and volumes
- Forerun collaboratively and give/receive constructive feedback
- Help maintain consistent grading and quality throughout the gym
- Learn and develop as a setter through feedback and mentorship
- Assist with competitions and special events
- Maintain a clean, organized and protected setting environment
- Help create climbs that are approachable for new climbers while still providing progression and challenge for experienced climbers
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR We’re interested in applicants from a range of backgrounds.
Previous commercial route setting experience is an asset.
We’d especially like to hear from people who:
- Have a strong understanding of climbing movement
- Enjoy being creative and experimenting with movement
- Work well as part of a team
- Can take feedback without ego and give feedback respectfully
- Are reliable and willing to work hard
- Care about creating good experiences for climbers of all ability levels
- Want to learn and improve as a route setter
WHAT WE'RE BUILDING We want a setting team with different strengths, styles and perspectives. Not every setter should create the same movement, climb the same grade, or come from the same background.
Our Head and senior setters will provide leadership, mentorship and structure, while our setting team will have the opportunity to contribute creatively and develop their own voice as setters.
This is also a chance to join Volume at the beginning and help establish the setting culture that our community will experience for years to come.
COMPENSATION
Starting wages: $21–$25/hour, depending on experience.
Employee climbing membership included.
Additional training and development opportunities will be available as the setting program grows.
