Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior UX Designer with 10+ years of experience to lead user experience design, research, usability testing, prototyping, and continuous improvement activities for complex digital products and services.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience applying UX design best practices, with a strong understanding of mobile-first and responsive design , user-centered design, Agile/Scrum methodologies, and Ontario Digital Service Design practices.

The role will work across four key delivery phases— Discovery, Alpha, Beta, and Live —to transform user and business needs into effective, accessible, and user-centered digital solutions. The Senior UX Designer will collaborate closely with product owners, business teams, developers, and other stakeholders to ensure projects remain aligned with objectives, schedules, and user needs.

Must-Have Skills

- 10+ years of professional experience.
- Extensive experience applying UX design best practices to complex digital solutions.
- Deep understanding of mobile-first and responsive design.
- Experience facilitating user research and usability testing.
- Strong communication and mediation skills with business teams and project stakeholders.
- Experience ensuring digital products progress according to project schedules and requirements.
- Expertise with UX design tools such as:

- Figma

- Axure

- Sketch

- InVision

- Adobe Creative Cloud

- Zeplin

- Justinmind
- Experience working with Agile/Scrum delivery methodologies.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with distributed teams and stakeholders.

Nice-to-Have Skills
- Accessibility compliance testing experience.
- Knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.
- Experience with React, Angular, or NodeJS.
- Degree or diploma in Graphic Design.
- Certification or education in usability, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or technical writing.

UX Delivery Lifecycle The Senior UX Designer will contribute to four distinct delivery phases based on the Ontario Digital Service Design Playbook .

- Discovery Phase

The Discovery phase focuses on understanding the problem space, user needs, business objectives, existing solutions, and long- and short-term goals before development begins.

- Facilitate project kickoff meetings and develop:

- Business Model Canvas
- 5 Whys analysis

- User Personas

- Stakeholder Mapping

- Strategy Map
- Short- and Long-Term Goals

- Fears and Challenges

- Problem Statement
- Facilitate user research activities.
- Develop User Interview Topic Maps.
- Create User Interview Scripts.
- Conduct and synthesize user interviews.
- Prepare User Research Findings Reports.
- Facilitate Inception/Science Fair Day activities.
- Present key findings and align business and technical stakeholders.
- Support planning for the Alpha phase.
- Develop User Storyboards.
- Develop Technical Service Blueprints.
- Define business Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
- Alpha Phase

The Alpha phase focuses on testing hypotheses, experimentation,



and validating potential solutions with users before building the service.

Key Deliverables

- Facilitate a Google Ventures Five-Day Design Sprint or appropriate variation where required.
- Produce clickable prototypes representing multiple potential solutions.
- Conduct usability testing sessions with users.
- Prepare research findings reports.
- Iterate and improve prototypes based on user feedback.
- Identify existing processes and policies that may need to change.
- Develop business proposals supporting funding for the Beta phase.
- Define a explicit vision for the solution.
- Create prioritized feature lists for Beta delivery.
- Define user, solution, and delivery KPIs.
- Beta Phase

The Beta phase focuses on building and validating a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for a larger group of users within a live user-facing environment. The UX Designer will operate within Scrum/Agile methodologies , participating in ceremonies such as:

- Daily stand-ups
- Sprint planning
- Backlog grooming/refinement
- Reporting
- Acceptance
- Retrospectives

Key Deliverables
- Create and validate user stories.
- Participate in prioritization of features and functions.
- Facilitate sketching workshops.
- Develop visual representations of concepts and user flows.
- Create and refine UX designs.
- Conduct user interviews for design validation.
- Synthesize individual and overall interview findings.
- Incorporate research findings into design enhancements.
- Obtain Product Owner approval.
- Prepare stories for backlog and future iteration planning.
- Conduct accessibility compliance testing during each iteration.
- Conduct regular usability testing on the MVP.
- Work approximately one iteration ahead of development teams to prepare and validate user stories and designs.
- Live Phase

The Live phase focuses on continuous improvement after the service has reached maturity and major backlog features have been implemented.

Key Deliverables

- Continue facilitating user research activities.
- Develop User Interview Topic Maps and Scripts.
- Conduct and synthesize user interviews.
- Prepare User Research Findings Reports.
- Conduct regular accessibility compliance testing on live releases.
- Conduct ongoing usability testing.
- Analyze usage analytics and user behavior patterns.
- Track and measure KPIs.
- Continuously research, test, monitor, and iterate the service.

Experience & Skill Set Requirements User Experience Design – 40%

- Extensive experience applying UX design best practices to digital solutions.
- Deep understanding of mobile-first and responsive design.
- Ability to efficiently and intelligently iterate designs and solutions.
- 3+ years of relevant experience participating in complex projects/products of varying sizes.
- Experience ensuring alignment with project plans, UX best practices, user-centered design, and Agile/Scrum methodologies.
- Experience facilitating user research and usability testing.

- Experience producing

- User Interview Topic Maps

- User Interview Scripts

- User Interview Synthesis

- User Research Findings Reports




- Experience with accessibility compliance testing is an asset.
- Degree or diploma in Graphic Design is preferred.
- Education or certification in usability, HCI, or technical writing is an asset.

Relationship Management – 20%
- Strong communication and mediation skills with business teams and core project members.
- Ability to ensure projects and products progress according to schedule.
- Experience developing strategies to overcome resistance to change.
- Ability to identify and capitalize on forces supporting organizational change.
- Experience working across Discovery, Alpha, Beta, Live, or comparable delivery methodologies.
- Ability to work effectively within balanced Agile teams consisting of Product Owners, UX Designers, and Developers.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-management capabilities.

Technical Skills – 30%
- Expertise with UX design and prototyping tools, including:

- JavaScript knowledge is an asset.

- Validate designs through user research and usability testing.
- Produce high-quality wireframes, prototypes, user flows, personas, journey maps, and service blueprints.
- Ensure accessibility considerations are incorporated throughout the product lifecycle.
- Support Agile teams with validated user stories and design solutions.
- Facilitate stakeholder alignment and communicate UX recommendations effectively.
- Use analytics, research, and user feedback to drive continuous improvement.
- Ensure UX deliverables remain aligned with business objectives, project schedules, and Ontario Digital Service practices.
