Youth and Family Outreach Support Worker

Victoria, BC | Full-Time (37.5 hours/week)

Salary: $27.50/hour

WHO WE ARE For more than 30 years, the Victoria Youth Empowerment Society (VYES) has walked alongside youth and families throughout Greater Victoria, providing responsive, individualized support that builds safety, stability, connection, and independence.

Through emergency shelter, outreach, family support, supported independent living, wellness programming, and prevention services, we support more than 1,000 youth and families each year.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY The Youth and Familty Outreach Support Worker provides a variety of services to at-risk youth (12-19 years of age) and their families in Victoria and the surrounding municipalities. The position provides services and interventions through crisis response, safety assessment and risk reduction services. It aims to provide conflict resolution and parent-teen mediation to assist in family stabilization and reunification.

Much of this position requires working collaboratively in an outreach and community-based capacity.

The successful candidate will be able to consistently and effectively carry out the key responsibilities of the position, including:

Youth and Family Engagement and Service Planning

- Working with youth and their families to carry out crisis intervention and supporting through urgent response, safety assessment and risk reduction to prompt a change in behaviour and/or situation.
- Interviewing youth and their families, preparing case histories, and assessing barriers and strengths. Providing intervention services collaboratively with other community programs, including MCFD, police officers and probation.
- Developing, implementing intervention programs to assist Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) and youth and families in determining goals and achieving the objectives developed.
- Facilitating referrals to appropriate community services,



including identified medical, mental health, addictions, legal and family services.
- Providing behavioural management skills, crisis response, intervention and risk reduction services to best support youth and families as well as create a safe and stable workplace, especially around issues such as trauma, suicidal ideation, mental health and addictions.
- Providing mediation support for parents around issues of family violence, sexual abuse, grief and loss, and early childhood education.
- Participating in integrated case management conferences, as required.
- Supporting youth to participate in the development and implementation of individualized short-term goals and establishing a transition plan.
- Accepting the clients’ rights to self-determination and individuality and must not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, language, religion, marital status, gender, sexual orientation, age, abilities, socio-economic status, political affiliations, or national ancestry.
- Setting appropriate boundaries, intervenes appropriately and maintaining a helping role to meet the needs of the youth or other family members.
- Acting as an advocate for youth and families and promotes empowerment for them to advocate on their own behalf.

Program Development and Administration

- Assisting MCFD in providing outreach services and helping to reconnect youth to appropriate care giving systems in the continuum of care.
- Maintaining a collaborative, cooperative working relationship, and liaise with MCFD, other agencies, professionals, ministries and the community.
- Participating in developing and implementing evaluation systems to assess the effectiveness of intervention. Modify services and programs as deemed appropriate.




- Fulfilling the requirements of and participates in committees to meet the standards of CARF accreditation as established by agency policy.
- Monitoring and managing own attitudes, behaviours, well being, and professional development in relation to increasingly challenging client populations and complex or sensitive presenting issues such as trauma and abuse.

WHO YOU ARE

- You are able to work independently, and constructively and effectively with others in both group and one-on-one settings.
- You are able to work collaboratively within youth services in Victoria
- You have good organization, time and management skills.
- Act as a strong advocate for youth and families, supporting their voices, needs and goals while connecting them with appropriate resources and services.

WHAT YOU BRING We're looking for someone with:

-Degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Work or in a related human services field.

-A minimum of 5 years experience (out of the last 10 years) which includes:

- Knowledge and experience with high-risk youth and their families
- Experience working with high-risk youth and families in a counselling or other helping capacity
- Experience with community-based programs and related community support systems

-Valid driver's license and own vehicle to transport youth COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
