Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Natural Resources is responsible for the management and administration of the Department of Natural Resources (the ‘Department’).
Under the strategic leadership of the Senior Director of Natural Resources, the Department leads the development and administration of regulations, policies and best practices related to the protection and sustainable development of lands, waters and resources in BFN’s Original Reserve. This work reflects our responsibilities as Anishinaabe and seeks to cultivate and promote the health of the land, air and water for future generations while balancing the current needs of the community.
Duties And Responsibilities
Provide operational and administrative leadership for natural resources programs.
Assist with the development and lead the implementation of departmental operational plans, policies, and initiatives, and provide recommendations to the Senior Director for review and approval, ensuring alignment with Anishinaabe values, governance priorities, and community well-being goals.
Assist with the development and oversee the implementation of departmental annual work plans, strategies and operating budgets.
Monitor departmental expenditures and authorize spending within delegated authority and approved budgets.
Identify and pursue opportunities to support the financial sustainability of the Department.
Collaborate with internal staff, legal counsel, consultants, and external parties to develop agreements and provide recommendations to the Senior Director for review, approval, and authorization.
Advise the Senior Director of Natural Resources on risks,
opportunities and impacts related to departmental programs, projects and services.
Oversee the preparation of technical, financial, and operational departmental briefing materials for the Senior Director and Executive Leadership Team..
Assess departmental staffing and capacity needs and lead recruitment and hiring, in collaboration with Human Resources.
Provide leadership, supervision, coaching, mentoring, and performance management to departmental staff while developing future leaders within the Department.
Monitor operational risks and implement mitigation strategies, escalating significant risks to the Senior Director.
Foster and model a positive and respectful workplace culture within the Department, aligned with BFN’s values.
Collaborate with other BFN departments with responsibilities related to lands and natural resources across the Original Reserve.
Collaborate with internal departments to support and coordinate initiatives affecting lands, resources, environmental stewardship, and community development across the Original Reserve.
Build and maintain operational partnerships with external agencies and partners as delegated by the Senior Director.

Required Skills
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Post-secondary degree in management, public administration, or a related discipline required. Advanced degree or executive-level training preferred.
Seven (7) or more years of progressive leadership experience, including management of staff, budgets, and multiple program areas.
Demonstrated extensive knowledge of Anishinaabe governance, traditions, community priorities, and cultural protocols.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the history, treaties, rights, and governance of Batchewana First Nation, including Traditional Knowledge and natural resource management practices.
Knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, social structures, and the priorities and needs of the Batchewana First Nation community.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of land and natural resource planning, management, and enforcement.
Experience integrating Indigenous knowledge, governance, and cultural frameworks into departmental strategy, policy and decision-making.
Demonstrated expertise in strategic planning, implementation and program evaluation.
Strong knowledge of people management and organizational systems.
Expertise in financial forecasting, funding frameworks, budget management and financial administration.
Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills
Demonstrated ability to inspire, motivate, and guide staff, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Robust negotiation and mediation, conflict resolution and advisory skills.
Excellent time management and organizational skills.
