Job Description:
We are looking for an experienced Controller to support a non-profit organization in Ottawa, Ontario through a Long-term Contract position. This role is ideal for a finance specialist who brings strong accounting leadership, hands-on experience with contribution agreements, and the ability to oversee reporting, budgeting, payroll, and month-end activities. The successful candidate will help maintain accurate financial operations, strengthen reporting processes, and provide dependable financial insight to support organizational decision-making.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring financial records are accurate, complete, and maintained in accordance with organizational and reporting standards.
- Lead month-end and year-end close activities, including account reconciliations, journal entries, and timely preparation of financial results.
- Prepare financial statements, internal reports, and ad hoc analysis to support leadership with planning and decision-making.
- Manage budgeting activities by coordinating forecasts, monitoring variances, and providing explicit explanations of financial performance.
- Administer payroll processes and help ensure employee payments, remittances, and related records are handled correctly and on schedule.
- Support the financial administration of contribution agreements by tracking funding requirements, monitoring compliance obligations, and preparing associated reports.
- Use accounting systems, CRM platforms, and reporting tools such as Excel and Crystal Reports to produce meaningful financial information.
- Contribute to ongoing improvements in accounting procedures, controls, and reporting workflows to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Requirements:
Ideal Qualifications:
- A minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including senior-level financial oversight responsibilities.
- Professional Accounting Designation.
- Previous experience working in a non-profit environment or a similar organization with complex funding and reporting requirements is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise in managing contribution agreements and related financial compliance activities.
- Strong knowledge of budgeting, payroll administration, month-end close, and financial statement preparation.
- Proficiency with accounting software, Microsoft Excel, and reporting tools used for financial analysis and reconciliations.
- Experience working with systems and platforms such as ADP, CRM applications, or comparable financial and reporting tools is considered an asset.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
