Role Description The Sous Chef is a full-time, on-site role based at The Gates on Roblin property in Headingley. This sprawling estate spans over 10 acres and includes the restaurant, an event centre, and a new retail plaza opening soon. The Sous Chef role supports the Executive Chef in overseeing kitchen operations with a primary focus on the restaurant.
Duties include food preparation, cooking, plating, and ensuring dishes meet quality standards and presentation guidelines. The Sous Chef leads and trains kitchen staff, helps manage inventory and ordering, and maintains a clean, safe, and organized work environment in line with health and safety regulations.
Day-to-day responsibilities include contributing to menu planning, assisting with specials and events, coordinating line service during busy periods, and ensuring consistent execution of recipes and techniques. The role also involves collaborating with front-of-house leadership, wedding planners, and general management to ensure smooth service and a superlative guest experience.
Qualifications
- Strong culinary skills, including cooking techniques, knife skills, and knowledge of ingredients and flavor profiles.
- Experience with kitchen operations such as food preparation, line management, and menu execution.
- Leadership abilities, including staff training, team coordination, and performance guidance.
- Knowledge of food safety, sanitation standards, and health regulations in a skilled kitchen.
- Ability to manage time, prioritize tasks, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Relevant culinary education, apprenticeship, or equivalent professional experience in restaurant or banquet settings.
- Commitment to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by restaurant operations and special events.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to working with both kitchen and front-of-house teams.
Remuneration The Sous Chef role can be an hourly or salary position and wages are competitive and commensurate with the applicant's experience in the industry. Future promotion, salary increases, and bonus compensation are merit based and evaluated on an annual basis.
