Automotive Technician – Block 1 Apprentice
Department: Service / Automotive Repair
Reports To: Shop Foreman / Service Manager / Lead Technician
Employment Type: Full-Time
Position Summary The Block 1 Automotive Technician Apprentice performs routine automotive maintenance, inspections, repairs, and entry-level diagnostic work while developing the practical skills required to progress through the Automotive Service Technician apprenticeship program.
The technician is expected to complete assigned work safely, efficiently, and accurately while following manufacturer specifications, shop procedures, and the direction of licensed or senior technicians.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine vehicle maintenance, including:
- Engine oil and filter changes
- Tire rotations, repairs, installation, and balancing
- Battery testing and replacement
- Air and cabin filter replacement
- Fluid inspections and servicing
- Wiper and bulb replacement
- Other scheduled maintenance
- Perform vehicle inspections and identify worn, damaged, or unsafe components.
- Assist with and perform repairs appropriate to training and experience, including:
- Brake system service and repairs
- Steering and suspension repairs
- Wheel bearing and hub replacement
- Exhaust system repairs
- Cooling system repairs
- Basic electrical repairs
- Starting and charging system repairs
- Other mechanical repairs as assigned
- Use diagnostic equipment, scan tools, test equipment, service information, and repair procedures to assist in diagnosing vehicle concerns.
- Accurately document inspection results, recommended repairs, work performed, and parts or materials used.
- Inform the Shop Foreman, Service Manager, or supervising technician of additional repairs or safety concerns identified during servicing.
- Follow repair orders and complete assigned work within reasonable labour times.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
- Properly operate hoists, tire machines, balancing equipment, diagnostic equipment, and other shop tools.
- Follow workplace health and safety requirements, including proper use of personal protective equipment and safe handling of automotive fluids, chemicals, batteries, tires, and other materials.
- Participate in apprenticeship training and continue developing the skills and knowledge required to advance through subsequent apprenticeship blocks.
- Assist licensed technicians with more complex diagnostic and repair work when required.
- Perform road tests when authorized and qualified to do so.
- Maintain a professional attitude and contribute to an efficient and cooperative shop environment.
Qualifications
- Registered or eligible to register as an Automotive Service Technician apprentice.
- Block 1 apprenticeship training completed or currently working toward Block 1 requirements.
- Basic understanding of automotive mechanical and electrical systems.
- Ability to safely use common automotive hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment.
- Valid driver's licence and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to follow instructions, technical information, and established repair procedures.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.
- Ability to work independently on tasks within the employee's demonstrated level of competency and under supervision when required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and move automotive parts, tires, tools, and equipment.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crouch, and work around or underneath vehicles for extended periods.
- Ability to safely work in an active automotive repair environment.
Performance Expectations The Block 1 Automotive Technician Apprentice is expected to:
- Complete work safely and correctly.
- Demonstrate steady improvement in technical knowledge and productivity.
- Ask for assistance when a repair or diagnosis exceeds their current level of training or experience.
- Minimize comebacks through careful workmanship and proper inspection.
- Maintain accurate repair-order documentation.
- Treat customer vehicles and company property with care.
- Arrive prepared for scheduled shifts and maintain dependable attendance.
- Progress toward completion of the Automotive Service Technician apprenticeship and eventual certification.
Scope of Position This is an apprentice-level position. The employee may perform maintenance and repair work independently when they have demonstrated competency in that area but will receive supervision, assistance, and technical guidance for work beyond their current training or experience.
The scope and complexity of assigned work are expected to increase as the apprentice progresses through additional training blocks and gains practical experience.
Pay: $18.00-$22.00 per hour
