About Youth Hoops

Youth Hoops Basketball Academy is an inclusive, values-driven basketball program focused on helping athletes in Edmonton grow on and off the court.

For our older athletes (ages 12–16), we focus on:

- Advanced skill development and game IQ
- Work ethic, discipline, and accountability
- Leadership, resilience, and teamwork under pressure

We serve athletes from developing to advanced levels and emphasize long-term growth as players and as people.

We’re looking for committed, knowledgeable COACHES FOR AGES 12–16 who:

- Live and model our core values: connection, curiosity, inclusivity, adaptability, discipline, resilience, excitement, impact, and passion

- Hold athletes to high standards while still supporting them as people
- Understand the balance between development, competition, and character
- Have a strong basketball IQ and can teach concepts clearly

Position Overview

You’ll work with athletes who are serious about improving and potentially competing at higher levels (school, club, or beyond).

You will:

- Lead structured practices focused on fundamentals, advanced skills, and game concepts
- Teach athletes how to think the game - spacing, decision-making, reading defenses, and playing as a team
- Challenge players while maintaining a supportive, respectful environment
- Model professionalism, discipline, and leadership every session

We run Fall, Winter, and Spring sessions,



primarily evenings and some weekends.

Responsibilities

- Plan and lead practice sessions for ages 12–16 with a explicit progression and purpose
- Teach basketball fundamentals, techniques, and advanced strategies to improve both individual and team performance
- Run drills that simulate game situations and build decision-making under pressure
- Provide direct, honest, and constructive feedback that pushes athletes to grow
- Manage group dynamics, set clear expectations, and hold players accountable
- Communicate regularly with players (and parents when appropriate) about effort, progress, and areas for improvement
- Collaborate with other coaches to align on curriculum, standards, and culture
- Participate in coach debriefs and share feedback to continually improve the program
- Represent and promote Youth Hoops within the basketball community
- Maintain a safe, structured environment that supports personal growth, effort, and respect

Core Requirements

- Prior basketball coaching or high-level playing experience (high school varsity, club, college, or equivalent)
- Strong understanding of basketball systems, tactics, and player development for teens
- Experience working with youth or teens in a teaching, coaching, or mentorship capacity




- Confident leading groups, correcting technique, and managing competitive personalities
- Reliable, organized, and fully prepared for practices and games
- Must pass criminal record and child intervention checks
- Available evenings
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Passionate about youth sports, mentorship, and character development

Preferred Qualifications

- Previous experience coaching competitive youth, high school, or club basketball
- First Aid and CPR certification
