South Mountain Community College (SMCC) reflects the diversity of the surrounding community, a rich mix of rural, urban, and suburban neighborhoods. Many of our students arrive from Phoenix, Laveen, Tempe, Guadalupe, and the surrounding area to attend classes at the main campus or our offsite facility in Guadalupe; we also offer evening courses in Laveen at Betty Fairfax High School.

Job Summary Instruct biology classes (lectures/laboratory sessions) for students from diverse backgrounds and/or cultures.



Teach various courses within the discipline of biology with an emphasis on non-majors course development such as Introductory Biology (100) and Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology (160). Use multiple methods of instruction, assessment results, and appropriate technologies to engage students and promote student success. Participate in divisional meetings and activities, campus meetings, divisional activities, and curriculum development as needed.

Essential Functions

50% –

- Instruction &
- Student Engagement - Supervises and instructs a diverse population of students in a classroom setting; develops written syllabi/course outlines and course materials; uses learning centered strategies to engage students and promote student success;

20% –

- Student Assessment &
- Instructional Improvement - Assesses and evaluates knowledge of subject matter taught and monitors students’ scholastic records; prepares and grades examinations and other learning activities; participates in division and college assessment and program review processes; uses assessment and evaluation results to improve instruction and student learning

20% –

- Curriculum Development &
- Instructional Innovation - Develops instructional materials and curriculum; demonstrates innovation in teaching and learning and the scholarship of learning by focusing on student learning, retention, and achievement; incorporates instructional technology and alternative delivery or scheduling techniques; maintains a team approach in collaborating with faculty, staff, and students.

10% –

- Professional Development, College Service &
- Student Support - Remains current with new trends and developments in the field through attendance at conferences, courses, seminars, and workshops; participates in college and district activities including department/division meetings, committees, workshops and projects. Maintains office hours to assist, tutor, and advise students to promote learning, citizenship and personal development; works with students outside of the classroom on instructional activities and projects.

Minimum Qualifications The following disciplines meet the requirements to teach in this field:

Master’s degree or higher in a biology discipline. Biology (biological sciences, life sciences, BIO) is a basic research lab science discipline such as cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, anatomy, microbiology, marine biology, zoology, botany, ecology, developmental, evolutionary, neurobiology, and other disciplines or subfields approved by the Biology Instructional Council.

OR

Master’s degree or higher in an applied biology discipline. Applied biology includes public health (epidemiology, nutrition, environmental health, biostatistics), bioengineering, biotechnology, environmental science, conservation biology, wildlife management, exercise physiology, pathology, nutrition science, and other applied biology disciplines or subfields approved by the Biology Instructional Council.

OR

Master’s degree or higher in medicine or health care including graduate or professional degrees such as MD, DO, DDS/DMD, DPM, DVM, PA, DPT, DC, ND, MBChB or MBBS, and other health care-related disciplines approved by the Biology Instructional Council. Requires transcript evaluation by the hiring committee.

OR

Master’s degree or higher in biology education, science education or secondary education with 18 semester graduate credits in biology and/or applied biology courses (see criteria A and B). The required 18 credits of graduate coursework may include up to 6 semester hours of science teaching methods courses. Requires transcript evaluation by the hiring committee.

Desired Qualifications

- Evidence of one or more years of Biology teaching experience at a post-secondary college or university
- Evidence of specific experiences using current and relevant pedagogies, such as student-centered teaching (e.g., active or cooperative learning, flipped classrooms,



problem-based learning) in the classroom and/or laboratory
- Experience using student learning outcomes and assessment techniques to improve teaching and learning
- Experience teaching in multiple modalities (online, in-person, hybrid, non-credit)
- Evidence of specific experiences using appropriate technology in both lecture and lab environments
- Evidence of experiences working with diverse populations of students and staff
- One year of relevant full-time MCCCD experience within the past two years

Special Working Conditions Ability to lift 30 lbs and be available for outreach events on weekends and/or evenings as needed
