POSITION SUMMARY:
This position reports to the Superintendent of Brampton West Family of Schools.
Child & Youth Care Practitioners operate under the direction of the Family of Schools Superintendent or another Superintendent, and under the supervision of the school Principal, to deliver programs and supports to individuals or groups of students with social, emotional, developmental, and self-regulation needs, in collaboration with educators and Support Services Personnel.
RESPONSIBILITIES (But not limited to):
- Promoting, supporting, or delivering class-wide and school-wide prevention programs and social-emotional learning opportunities.
- Promoting, supporting, or delivering prevention programs for specific groups of students to address well-being and social-emotional needs (e.g., stress, anti-bullying, anti-human trafficking, student voice, equity, bereavement, separation and divorce, body image, self-esteem, teen parenthood).
- Participating in assessment and needs identification to meet behavioural and academic objectives for children and youth.
- Providing student check-ins and counselling to address individualized goals.
- Utilizing the techniques of non-violent crisis prevention and intervention to safeguard student and staff safety when required.
- Observing, monitoring and collecting data regarding student performance.
- Assisting in delivering classroom programs, formulated or modified by the classroom teacher, to students with special needs.
- Providing support to students experiencing personal crises.
- Assisting students in acquiring social and recreational skills
- Attending Team Meetings, as appropriate.
- Planning student engagement, self-regulation and social-emotional learning group programs, in collaboration with teachers, parents, and Support Services Personnel.
- Planning strategies to address student specific needs with teachers, parents, and other Special Services Personnel.
- Collaboratively modifying and evaluating social skills, social-emotional learning, and self-regulation programs for individuals and groups of students.
- Consulting with classroom teachers, Support Services Personnel, Administrators, and parents regarding student needs in various areas including social-emotional learning, equity and inclusion, mental wellness, trauma, Applied Behaviour Analysis, etc.
- Providing in-service training to other members of the school community (e.g., crisis prevention, conflict resolution, ABA).
- Collaborating with school staff to prepare Safety Plans.
- Contributes to the development of Individual Education Plans and alternative expectations.
- Recordkeeping, report writing and data collection, as required.
- Advocating on behalf of students.
- Liaising with parents regarding student progress and/or needs .
- Adherence to the Standards of Practice of the Child and Youth Care Department, including informed consent, recordkeeping, report writing, data collection, caseload statistics, etc.
- Supervising post-secondary CYCP students in placements, as appropriate.
- Providing CYCP representation for the Department and/or Board project committees.
- Representing Dufferin-Peel in committee work with community agencies, as directed by the Superintendent.
- Liaising with community agencies in support of specific children.
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:
- College Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Child and Youth Care.
- Membership in the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Care an asset.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/OTHER:
- Minimum two (2) years of Child and Youth Care practice experience following graduation preferred.
- Experience within an educational system preferred.
- Experience providing direct support to individual students and groups of children and youth with social, developmental, and well-being challenges.
- Experience supporting diverse learning needs including learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
- Experience with de-escalation strategies, Applied Behaviour Analysis, trauma-informed practice, and equity and inclusion initiatives.
- Familiarity with programs to support school needs, including mental health and well-being, self-regulation, social skills, social-emotional learning, bullying interventions and restorative practices.
