Status Part-Time, Regular 2.5 days/week (0.5 FTE)

Role Summary

Reporting to the Director of Programs & Licensed Care and working in partnership with the RN/Clinical Lead, the Clinical Nurse Educator is a Level 4 nursing role that supports and facilitates nurses and Mental Health Workers to attain excellence in practice through the development, provision and evaluation of clinical nursing strategies, education and clinical resources. Applies a broad knowledge base of the mental health and substance use healthcare environment, the science and art of nursing, educational theory and models, program development and evaluation, planned change, process consultation and research utilization to provide role modeling, leadership and consultation and to promote a positive learning culture and advance professional nursing and support staff practices.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Assesses and Plans Nursing Practice:

a. Designs educational strategies to support and change practice;

b. Assesses the learning needs of nursing staff and plans educational experiences and programs; and c. Analyzes trends that affect educational programming and incorporates findings

- Provides educational experiences and programs and facilitates processes to:

a. Support nursing staff during organizational and qualified change in clinical practice.

b. Enable nursing staff to meet their competency needs c. Integrate legislative standards into professional nursing practice d. Provides role modeling, coaching, and mentoring in continuing education, professional development/career planning for nurses e. Provides clinical support to the Clinical Nurse Leader in recruitment and selection of nursing staff f. Provides learning opportunities for professional visitors,



interdisciplinary staff and students related to nursing practice

- Develops evaluation processes for educational programs and activities and integrates relevant current methods and tools to measure unit/program/nursing/organizational and patient care outcomes. Evaluates the effectiveness of educational experiences and programs to meet the learning needs in defined areas; and measures outcomes as they relate to educational programming and activities.
- Collaborates within VIHA to establish and provide standards of care a. Provides knowledge, skills and leadership in the development and evaluation of practice standards/guidelines;

b. Provides consultation on program development and evidence-based education practice to individuals, programs and the organization c. Consults with unit Clinical Nurse Leader on performance issues and recommends relevant educational strategies d. Collaborates with academic partners and coordinates experiences for nursing and other health care students.
- Integrates evidence-based practice into educational programs and activities reflecting current issues and trends; and develops and conducts research in Continuing Education and Staff Development and incorporates findings.
- Provides leadership in Education and Nursing Clinical Practice:

a. In collaboration with senior leadership, acts as change agent at practice, organizational, professional, and legislative levels;

b. In collaboration with the RN Clinical Lead and site manager, shares educational and nursing expertise through publication, conference presentations; facilitates group dynamics and team building;

c. In collaboration with the RN Clinical Lead, provides leadership, education and clinical support to the department on corporate initiatives such as infection control and resident safety, clinical ethics, etc.;

d.



Takes the lead in providing mentorship, training and orientation to undergraduate and new graduate Nurses, and liaises with educational institutions and facilitates student placements for their department;

e. Advises on policy review and amendment;

f. Ability to coach and mentor staff on specific PSR approaches to mental health.

Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience:

 Graduate of a recognized nursing or psychiatric nursing program or evidence of an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

 Current practicing registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN or a practicing RPN.

 3-5 years’ recent, related experience including 2 years’ relevant clinical experience.

 Clear criminal record check through the Solicitor General’s office.

 Up-to-date on Provincial immunization schedule.

 Negative TB Test.

 Management/supervisory experience considered essential.

 Ability to delegate tasks.

 Computer skills, including the ability to use MS Office and other related computer technology.

 A sound understanding of current and future nursing and health care issues and the potential impact on nursing education and clinical practice.

 Ability to operate related equipment.

 Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

 Valid BC Driver’s License and reliable transportation required to work across multiple sites.
