Responsible for leading a team of controls integrators in the day-to-day technical execution of assigned projects. Leads projects, designs, programs, commissions, installs and services automated machinery in accordance with customer requirements and external (CSA, ESA, OSHA, etc), company and department standards and policies. Generally, involves the application of the following technologies; PLCs, HMIs, vision systems, robots, servo systems, industrial networks, databases and PC based software applications.
What You’ll Be DoingTechnical Leadership, Team Development & Continuous Improvement
- Conduct code reviews with controls design team members to ensure quality output
- Provide technical guidance to other Integrators, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical department
- Mentor members of the controls design team
- Perform 1:1 meetings with controls design team members
- Assist controls manager in loading and scheduling team members activities
- Manage the overall performance of controls design team members
- Lead initiatives on controls department standardization
- Participate in process improvement initiatives across design disciplines
- Ensure adequate onboarding is provided for a smooth transition of new team members, and ongoing training and development for existing team members
Technical Design Execution & Project Delivery
- Frequent communication with other engineering disciplines to fully understand operational requirements
- Communicate with engineering in order to fully understand sequence of operations
- Validate machinery operations in conjunction with assemblers and electricians
- Assist in the design control systems in accordance with customer requirements and company and department standards
- Provide technical guidance to other team members with respect to the implementation of particular standards and programming techniques
- Program control systems in accordance with customer requirements, company and department standards, and project specific designs
- Commission, install and service machinery at the customer site
- May provide technical training to customer operations and maintenance staff
- Maintain red-lined electrical drawings, as a record of changes made during wiring and debugging
- Required to work in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with company Health and Safety and Other Policies
- All above duties to be performed in a timely manner and in an ISO 9001 environment

- Must have significant knowledge and practical experience the following areas:
- Automated machinery design, build and operation
- Programming PLCs & HMIs
- Programming Vision Systems
- Programming Robots
- Programming Servo Systems
- Programming using C++, VB in a Microsoft environment, preferably .Net
- Database design and implementation
- Implementation of Industrial Networks
- Must have good written and verbal communication skills in the English language
- Must be able to communicate effectively with customers and internal team members
Level of Autonomy and Authority
- Works as a fully qualified professional without detailed supervision
- Expected to oversee and monitor controls design teams working on multiple projects
- Responsible for the controls design and programming of complete lines or stand-alone machines that may have multiple team members assigned
- Guide and monitor the work of all controls programmers within team
- Provide input to management with respect to the evolution of company and department technical standards and designs
Key Requirements (Education, Experience, and Qualifications)
- College or University degree in engineering or related discipline
- A minimum 7 years progressive experience designing or implementing software and control systems in conjunction with automated machinery
- Must have a valid passport and driver’s license, as well as the ability to travel to customer sites both locally and internationally
- Must be available to travel for periods of up to 3 weeks
Special Requirements Physical demands and work environment
- Must be physically able to work with automated machinery from standing, sitting, stooping, kneeling and crouching positions.
- Must be able to work in all types of manufacturing environments (oil, dust, etc.). May need to lift and/or move moderate weight.
The base salary range for this position is $50.46 - $63.09 per year (CAD). The posted range reflects the expected base salary for this position. Actual base salary will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and experience, as well as internal equity considerations. Offers are typically made within the range and not at the top of the range to support growth and progression. This position is eligible to participate in a short-term incentive plan. Incentive awards, if any, are based on business and individual performance and are not guaranteed.
