As Director, Marketing and Communications you will be the driving force behind a public awareness campaign that inspires giving, builds community, and strengthens relationships. About the Role
As a senior leader, you'll report to the CEO and work closely with the Directors of Philanthropy and Philanthropic Programs. You’ll lead strategy development and implementation across communications, marketing, annual giving, and community fundraising, while providing guidance and mentorship to a growing team. You will be stepping in to lead a high performing team who have experienced considerable growth over recent years.
Your challenge will be to lead us into an even brighter future, building awareness, growing our donor base, and exploring new opportunities as we seek to meet ambitious plans for the future of Guelph General Hospital.
While this position is structured as a full-time, 12-month contract to contribute to the coverage plans for a parental leave, we recognize that exceptional candidates may bring valuable experience from consulting, agency, or portfolio careers. For the right candidate, we may consider a reduced schedule with prorated compensation. In addition, there may be an opportunity for extension beyond the initial term, subject to organizational needs, funding, and business priorities.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead Public Awareness Campaign
- Issue the prepared RFP for the Foundation’s public awareness campaign
- Select and onboard a qualified agency or vendor partner(s), negotiating scope and deliverables to align with budget and organizational goals
- Oversee campaign execution from concept to launch, ensuring brand consistency and message alignment with Foundation and Hospital priorities
- Establish and track key performance indicators in collaboration with the selected partner(s) to measure campaign reach, engagement and effectiveness
- Deliver regular progress updates to leadership (including GGH Comms and the Foundation Board of Directors), including a final campaign report with recommendations for future initiatives
Steward of the Foundation’s Brand Voice
- Develop compelling, audience-focused messaging to support broad awareness-driving and fundraising initiatives, including events, annual giving, community engagement and integrated campaigns
- Advance the Foundation’s brand consistently across all communications channels and materials, ensuring a clear and cohesive brand voice
- Develop and execute in-hospital marketing efforts to ensure Foundation presence across the hospital’s two campus locations (including but not limited to posters, TV screens, brochures, etc.)
- Guide tactical roll out of communications materials (across digital, print and paid media), acting as the steward of brand guidelines and key messaging
- Support Foundation leadership with briefings and speaking notes for internal and external engagements
- Build and maintain strong relationships with Guelph General Hospital Communications team, clinical leaders, and external partners to ensure aligned messaging
Media Relations
- Develop campaign-based and seasonal media strategies to reach audiences within Guelph and surrounding areas
- Build and manage media relations with online, print and broadcast journalists
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and spokespeople to facilitate proactive / reactive media opportunities, broadening the awareness of the Foundation
- Media monitoring and reporting
Team Leadership and Analysis
- Monitor and report on cross-channel performance metrics and fundraising revenue
- Ensure accurate recording of activities and revenue in Raiser’s Edge
- Deliver regular performance reports, including ROI and strategic recommendations
- ·Support direct reports through coaching, performance management, and development
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and mission-aligned team culture
- Represent the Foundation positively across all community and stakeholder engagements
About You
You’re an experienced leader with a strategic mindset, excellent communication skills, and a passion for mission-driven work. You thrive in dynamic environments, enjoy mentoring others, and excel at bringing people together to achieve shared goals.
Must-Have Qualifications:
- College or university diploma or degree - or equivalent experience - in marketing, communications, public relations or journalism
- Minimum 8-10 years’ of relevant experience in marketing/communications including at least 5+ years of managing teams
- Experience leading an RFP process and working with and managing agency partners and/or external vendors
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with proven ability to develop persuasive and cutting-edge communications strategies
- Capable of translating complex subject matter into digestible content across multiple channels
- Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to multitask and manage competing priorities
- Track record of successfully leading experienced teams and collaborating effectively with others including senior leadership, board members, Foundation staff, volunteers and donors, as well as external/agency partners
- Proficiency in MS Office and associated programs
- Passion for the mission of the Foundation
- Knowledge of Guelph-Wellington community
- Commitment to advancing equity, diversity and inclusion
Nice to Have:
- Master’s or post-graduate degree
- Experience with fundraising databases or CRM systems
- Experience in fundraising and/or non-profit organizations and/or healthcare
