E-Commerce Website Developer Intern
Company: Vallari Decor
Location: Etobicoke, Ontario
Position Type: Internship
About Vallari Decor
Vallari Decor is a Canadian e-commerce business specializing in décor products for weddings, events, homes, and commercial spaces.
Since 2018, we have built our business primarily through online marketplaces, selling our products to customers across Canada, the United States, and internationally.
We are now looking to establish our own independent e-commerce presence and are seeking an intern who can help us build a new website from the ground up.
About the Role
We are looking for a self-motivated E-Commerce Website Developer Intern with previous experience building websites.
The primary project for this internship will be to help plan, design, build and launch a new e-commerce website for Vallari Decor from scratch.
This is not a website maintenance position. We are looking for someone who is comfortable taking a project from an idea to a functional, professional website.
You'll work directly with the owner to understand the business, products, customers and overall vision. From there, we need someone who can bring the technical knowledge and initiative required to turn that vision into a working website.
We are specifically looking for a self-starter who can research solutions, make recommendations, troubleshoot problems and move the project forward without requiring step-by-step technical direction.
Primary Project & Responsibilities
Your main responsibility will be helping build Vallari Decor's new e-commerce website from the ground up, including:
- Planning the overall structure and functionality of the website.
- Building and configuring the e-commerce website.
- Creating the homepage, product pages,
collection/category pages and other essential pages.
- Creating intuitive navigation and an easy-to-use customer experience.
- Setting up and organizing products and collections.
- Ensuring the website works well on both desktop and mobile devices.
- Setting up shopping cart, checkout and other core e-commerce functionality.
- Helping configure payment, shipping and other necessary integrations.
- Implementing appropriate apps, plug-ins or integrations where needed.
- Applying basic SEO best practices throughout the website.
- Optimizing website performance and page speed.
- Testing the website and troubleshooting technical issues.
- Recommending features or improvements that would make the website more effective.
- Helping prepare the website for launch.
- Documenting important processes so the website can be maintained after the internship.
Required Experience Previous website-building experience is required for this position.
We're open to experience gained through employment, freelance work, school projects or personal projects; however, applicants should be able to demonstrate that they have previously built a functional website.
Experience with Shopify or another e-commerce platform is strongly preferred.
Applicants with a portfolio or examples of websites they have previously built are encouraged to include them with their application.
Who We're Looking For The ideal candidate is someone who:
- Has previously built at least one complete website.
- Is comfortable taking a website project from concept through completion.
- Is a strong self-starter and can work independently.
- Can research and solve technical problems without relying on step-by-step instructions.
- Understands responsive/mobile-friendly website design.
- Has a good understanding of website layout, navigation and user experience.
- Has experience with Shopify, WordPress, Webflow or similar platforms.
- Has an interest in e-commerce and online retail.
- Is organized and detail-oriented.
- Can communicate technical recommendations in a way that is easy for a non-technical business owner to understand.
- Is comfortable suggesting better solutions when they see an opportunity for improvement.
Knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Shopify Liquid, SEO, analytics or e-commerce integrations would be considered an asset.
What This Internship Offers
This is an opportunity to take ownership of a real website development project for an established Canadian e-commerce business.
Rather than making minor updates to an existing website, you'll have the opportunity to help build an e-commerce site from the beginning and see it through to launch.
You'll work with real products, customers and business requirements while gaining hands-on experience across website development, e-commerce, UX, SEO and digital strategy.
Most importantly, we're looking for someone who can bring their own expertise and ideas to the project. We know our business and our customers — we're looking for someone who knows websites and is excited to help us build one.
Pay: $18.00 per hour
Expected hours: 25.0 per week
