Library Thunder Bay Full-time Contract

Overview

Reporting to the Head, Access Services and Outreach, the Evening and Weekend Supervisor provides administrative and supervisory support to the Access Services department during evening and weekend operations. The position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of part-time student staff, ensuring effective coverage of library service points, maintaining high-quality customer service, and supporting the smooth operation of Chancellor Paterson Library outside regular business hours.

The Evening and Weekend Supervisor also acts as a delegate for the Head, Access Services and Outreach and supports library operations through technology coordination, collection maintenance, and oversight of the University's evening photo identification service.

Responsibilities

Access Services Supervision and Administration

- Supervises, guides, mentors, and develops up to 15 part-time student staff working in Access Services.
- Provides direction to student staff responsible for lending and borrowing, customer service, document delivery, and photo identification services.
- Establishes and oversees student staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage of physical and virtual service points during evening and weekend hours.
- Monitors Access Services operations and provides guidance and support to staff to ensure consistent, high-quality customer service.
- Addresses staff concerns and customer service issues and resolves operational challenges as appropriate.
- Establishes work priorities and plans for student staff based on operational requirements.
- Ensures the library is opened and closed according to established schedules.
- Approves part-time staff time cards and maintains accurate part-time staffing budget information.
- Works collaboratively with the Manager, Access Services and the Head, Access Services and Outreach to identify staffing needs and ensure appropriate service coverage.
- Provides backup support for part-time student staff at the Thunder Bay Education Library.
- Responds to questions and complaints from students, faculty, and staff and exercises appropriate judgment in resolving service issues,



including approved exceptions such as loan-period extensions or library fine overrides.
- Considers accessibility guidelines and supports equitable access to library services.

Technology and Service Operations

- Works closely with the Technology Services Centre to ensure public computers and printers are operational and up to date.
- Coordinates with the Digital Initiatives Department, external service contractors, and vendors regarding technology not supported by the Technology Services Centre.
- Ensures relevant equipment and technology supporting evening and weekend operations is functioning effectively.
- Assists in collecting and analyzing usage data to identify service trends and make recommendations for improvements.

Library Collection and Stack Maintenance

- Assists with projects involving the shifting and relocation of library collections in collaboration with the Manager, Access Services.
- Works with Collection Services to organize materials located in off-site storage and coordinate retrieval of library materials.
- Provides statistics and information regarding library space and holdings to librarians as required.

Photo Identification Services

- Oversees the evening operation of the University's photo identification service.
- Issues University identification cards for students, faculty, and staff, as well as badges for various faculties and departments.
- Ensures photo identification equipment, including printers, computers, cameras, lighting, and supplies, is operational and maintained.

Qualifications

- A library technician diploma or related degree combined with three years of library experience.
- Experience supervising, training, mentoring, or directing staff, preferably in a library or customer service environment.




- Demonstrated ability to establish and manage staff schedules and coordinate operational coverage.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, with the ability to respond effectively to questions, concerns, and complaints.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and make operational decisions independently within established policies and procedures.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Ability to work effectively with staff working varied and non-standard hours.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across departments.
- Familiarity with library systems, procedures, and technology would be an asset.
