Job Overview

Channel Industrial Group Inc. is seeking an Experienced Fitter to join our production team in a custom steel fabrication environment. Reporting to the Welding Supervisor, the Fitter is responsible for reading fabrication drawings, laying out steel components, fitting parts and assemblies, and preparing work for welding according to drawing, dimensional, and quality requirements.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience in structural steel, plate fabrication, or heavy custom fabrication, with the ability to work accurately from drawings and safely handle large steel components in a fast-paced shop environment.

Responsibilities

- Read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, work orders, and layout instructions in both metric and imperial units.
- Review drawings and work instructions to determine material requirements, fit-up sequence, and assembly approach.
- Lay out, align, fit, tack, clamp, and assemble custom steel components, plates, structural parts, and fabricated weldments.
- Verify dimensions,



squareness, alignment, fit-up, and tolerances using measuring and layout tools.
- Prepare parts for welding by grinding, cleaning, beveling, positioning, and securing materials as required.
- Safely operate overhead cranes and use basic rigging practices to move, position, and stage heavy steel materials and fabricated components.
- Work closely with welders, supervisors, and production team members to support quality, efficiency, and on-time delivery.
- Identify drawing, fit-up, material, or quality concerns and communicate issues to the Welding Supervisor before proceeding.
- Accurately clock in and out of work orders to support time tracking, productivity, and shop procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while following OHSA and company safety procedures, including proper use of PPE.

Qualifications

- Minimum of 5 years of fitting experience in a custom steel fabrication, structural steel, platework, or heavy manufacturing setting.
- Strong ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, and work instructions.
- Experience fitting and assembling heavy steel parts, structural components, plates, and custom fabricated assemblies.
- Strong measuring, layout, and dimensional-checking skills in both metric and imperial units.
- Experience using grinders, clamps, squares, levels, tape measures, and other layout and fitting tools.
- Experience operating overhead cranes and using basic rigging practices,



or willingness to complete required training.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and pride in accurate fit-up and workmanship.
- Ability to work safely in a fabrication shop environment and follow established procedures.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a production team.

Assets

- Welding experience, including tack welding or stitch welding.
- Valid CWB welding certification.
- Forklift and overhead crane certification.
- Experience with JobBOSS² or other ERP/production time-tracking systems.
- Knowledge of steel grades, plate fabrication, structural components, and heavy fabrication practices.
- Red Seal or related trade certification is an asset.
