GHD has openings for an Intermediate Fire Protection Engineer in our Waterloo or GTA offices.
The position will support a wide variety of projects involving code consulting, system design/evaluation, fire modelling, etc. Our workplace thrives on a hybrid model, combining in-office collaboration and flexibility. Fire Protection System Design: Develop and review fire protection system designs, including fire alarms, sprinklers, standpipe, and clean agent systems.
Fire Risk Assessment: Conduct fire risk assessments to identify potential hazards, assess their impact, and develop mitigation strategies. Evaluate occupant egress routes, fire separations, and the fire resistance ratings of building components.
Code Compliance: Stay updated with fire safety codes, regulations, and industry best practices. Review architectural and engineering plans to identify fire and life safety concerns. Collaborate with architects, engineers, and contractors to address fire protection requirements during the design and construction phases.
Inspections and Testing: Perform inspections and tests of fire protection systems to ensure proper functionality and compliance. Identify deficiencies, recommend corrective actions, and verify their implementation. Conduct drills and exercises to assess the effectiveness of emergency procedures.
Technical Documentation: Prepare technical reports, specifications, and drawings related to fire protection systems. Maintain accurate records of inspections, tests, maintenance activities, safety systems, and recommended enhancements.
Continuous Improvement:
Stay informed about advancements in fire protection technologies and methodologies. Familiar with National, Provincial and Municipal Codes and Standards. Ensure the design documents meet established project criteria and applicable standards.
Coordinate the preparation of engineering specifications and drawings. Utilizes industry-specific software and related technologies in design and analysis. Project management, including financial review, maintaining the budget, and meeting milestones and deliverables.
Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Eligibility to practice in Quebec is an asset.
Certified Fire Protection
Specialists, fire inspector) are advantageous. 5 - 8 years of relevant experience in the evaluation and design of water-based fire protection systems, non-water-based fire protection systems, fire alarm systems, building and life safety systems assessment, inspection and acceptance testing, fire pump selection and water demand calculation in healthcare, commercial, industrial and institutional projects. Interpretation and application of building and fire codes, including but not limited to NFPA, NFC, IFC, OFC, OBC, etc. Design software, hydraulic calculation, and CAD tools.
Ability to work on several projects at a time with multiple design teams, Excellent communication skills, both written and oral – including report writing and preparation of competitive proposals. Responsible for taking design projects from start to finish and applying high technical, qualified engineering and consulting expertise. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to assess fire risks and develop effective solutions.
