Full-time Behavioural Specialist - 1.0 FTE (Temporary)

Position Summary:

The Division Behavioural Specialist will provide expert support to schools and families in addressing complex student behavioural and mental health needs. Working directly with students, families, and school staff, the specialist will collaborate with internal and external service providers to ensure coordinated, evidence-based interventions.

Student Support and Intervention

- Work directly with students in classrooms and one-on-one sessions to address behavioural and mental health challenges.
- Confer with teachers, school administrators, and families regarding student needs and progress.
- Attend weekly case conferences with the Model for Student Support (MS2) team to discuss student concerns.
- Participate in Child Psychiatry and pediatrician appointments as required.
- Support school counsellors in crisis situations, including managing mental health concerns, facilitating referrals to outside agencies, and assisting in crisis management.

Assessment and Planning
- Lead Threat Assessments and respond to threats as required (CSTAG protocol).
- Assist in planning for medically fragile students, including support with the development of medical safety plans.
- Consult on student medication and provide teaching to staff and parents as needed.
- Develop documentation for programming, including Behaviour Plans,



Regulation Plans, and Contact Notes.

Professional Development and Training
- Lead “Handle with Care” training for staff on verbal de-escalation, self-defense, and restraint; provide debriefing following incidents requiring restraint.
- Deliver career development to school staff (administrators, teachers, educational assistants, counselors) as requested.

Collaboration and Community Engagement
- Collaborate with internal and/or external service providers (e.g., SLPs, OTs) to coordinate student support.
- Establish connections with community services in the five RDCRS rural communities to coordinate regional support.
- Participate in the research, development, and implementation of division-wide programs such as CSTAG and Re-Set Process.

Reporting and Administrative Duties
- Maintain an updated Google calendar of all school visits and share with the Associate Superintendent of Student Services.
- Prepare written reports with recommendations for school staff and families.
- Assist with grant writing and program documentation for the school division.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designate.

Qualification & Requirements:

- Degree or diploma in Behavioural Science, Psychology, Psych Nursing, Education, or related field.
- Experience working with children and adolescents with complex behavioural and mental health needs.
- Knowledge of evidence-based behavioural interventions and crisis management strategies.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Willingness to travel within the division and attend off-site appointments.
