Summary The Investigator (K9 Support) works directly alongside the K9 Handler during drug detection operations in compliance with Health and Safety programming. This position is responsible for conducting physical searches of areas, vehicles, containers, cargo, luggage, or personal belongings that the K9 has indicated as potential detection sites. The role requires strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and strict adherence to safety, confidentiality, and evidence-handling procedures.

These are contractor positions, contract assignments can vary in length and work hours can be anything from a few hours to very long hours depending on the individual assignment.

Key Responsibilities

Search Operations

- Conduct thorough and systematic searches of areas, vehicles, cargo, and personal belongings as directed by K9 indications or operational protocols.
- Follow established search procedures to ensure consistency, safety, and compliance with legal and organizational standards.
- Secure and document any contraband or evidence located during searches, maintaining proper chain-of-custody.
- Support the K9 Handler during detection operations by ensuring a safe and controlled environment for both personnel and the working dog.
- Communicate effectively with the K9 Handler and other security personnel during operations.

Documentation & Reporting

- Accurately record details of all searches, findings, and outcomes in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare clear,



factual written reports outlining search procedures, results, and any actions taken.
- Maintain confidentiality of all findings and ensure proper handling of sensitive information.

Interviewing & Statement Taking

- Conduct preliminary interviews with subjects, witnesses, or persons of interest during or after search operations
- Take clear, factual statements that adhere to legal, regulatory, and organizational guidelines
- Accurately document and preserve all statements as part of the investigative record

Safety & Compliance

- Adhere to all organizational safety protocols and legal requirements for search and seizure.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow contamination-prevention procedures as appropriate.
- Remain alert to potential hazards, threats, or unsafe conditions during search operations.
- Ensure that all activities are conducted in a professional, respectful, and non-discriminatory manner.

Professional Conduct & Support

- Work collaboratively with the K9 Handler and other members of the security team to maintain operational effectiveness.
- Participate in ongoing training related to search techniques, evidence handling, and legal procedures.
- Provide assistance during demonstrations, training exercises, or public relations events when required.
- Uphold company values of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality at all times.

Requirements





- High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education in security, law enforcement, or related field preferred.
- Strong observation and attention-to-detail skills.
- Working knowledge of search and evidence-handling procedures.
- Ability to follow precise instructions and maintain situational awareness.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure.
- High ethical standards and discretion when handling sensitive matters.
- Physically fit and capable of performing repetitive and detailed search tasks.

Licenses / Certifications

- Valid Alberta security & Investigator license
- Valid driver’s license with clean abstract preferred.
- First Aid / CPR certification preferred.
- Training in search techniques, evidence preservation, or investigative procedures considered an asset.
- Training in investigative interviewing, statement taking, or advanced evidence handling (e.g., Reid Technique, PEACE Model, or equivalent) considered an asset.
- Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in security, law enforcement, or inspection work.
- Experience conducting physical searches or inspections preferred.
- Familiarity with K9 operations or narcotics detection procedures is considered an asset.
