Job Summary
We currently have 2 openings for the Jitney/Pull-Out Driver out of our Port Coquitlam, BC location. The Jitney/Pull-Out Driver is responsible for collecting and moving waste and recycling bins from locations that are inaccessible to standard collection trucks, such as underground parking garages, apartment buildings, tight residential areas, laneways, and other restricted-access locations.
Using a smaller collection vehicle, the Jitney/Pull-Out Driver safely retrieves bins and brings them to an accessible collection point where they can be serviced by the main collection vehicle. Following collection, the driver returns the bins to their designated locations.
This role is critical to ensuring efficient and reliable waste collection for customers and properties where standard collection vehicles cannot access the waste storage area. Shift starts early afternoon (From 1.00pm).
Position Responsibilities
- Operate a jitney, pull-out vehicle, or other designated collection vehicle safely and efficiently.
- Access areas that cannot accommodate standard waste collection trucks, including:
-Underground parking garages -Apartment and condominium buildings
-Tight laneways and driveways
-Loading docks
-Commercial properties
-Restricted-access or high-density collection areas
- Safely pull waste and recycling bins from their storage locations to an accessible collection point.
- Position bins appropriately for servicing by the main collection vehicle.
- Return empty bins to their designated location after collection.
- Navigate tight spaces, ramps, parking structures, and congested areas while maintaining a high level of situational awareness.
- Perform daily vehicle inspections and report any mechanical, safety, or operational concerns.
- Ensure bins are handled carefully to minimize damage to property, bins, and surrounding infrastructure.
- Follow established collection routes, schedules,
and service instructions.
- Communicate with dispatch, supervisors, and collection truck drivers regarding route conditions, access issues, and service requirements.
- Maintain professional and courteous interactions with customers, property managers, building staff, and the public.
- Keep the vehicle and equipment clean and in good operating condition.
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable transportation regulations.
- Report damaged, inaccessible, overflowing, or improperly placed bins as required.
- Complete required documentation, route records, and vehicle inspection reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence.
- Clean or acceptable driver's abstract.
- Previous experience operating commercial vehicles is an asset.
- Previous experience in waste collection, delivery, transportation, or a similar environment is an asset.
- Strong driving skills and the ability to safely maneuver vehicles in tight and confined areas.
- Excellent awareness of pedestrians, vehicles, buildings, overhead obstructions, and other hazards.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to follow routes, instructions, and established safety procedures.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to repeatedly enter and exit the vehicle throughout the shift.
- Ability to push, pull, maneuver, and position waste and recycling bins.
- Ability to walk, stand, bend, reach, and maneuver around collection areas.
- Ability to work in underground garages, loading areas, apartment buildings, and other confined or challenging environments.
- Ability to safely perform physical duties associated with moving and positioning waste containers.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed primarily outdoors and at customer properties.
- Regular exposure to traffic, pedestrians, heavy equipment, waste, noise, dust, and varying weather conditions.
- Work may involve underground parking garages,
tight access points, ramps, laneways, and other confined or difficult-to-access areas.
- Late morning /early afternoon starts, weekends, and varying schedules may be required depending on route and customer requirements.
- The position requires a strong commitment to safe driving, pedestrian awareness, and property protection.
