Vacancy Status Existing Job Summary The Junior Programmer role will assist with the provision of therapeutic social/recreational activities, Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), overnight monitoring and behavior interventions for Adult Day Program and Overnight Stay Participants (which includes frail elderly, dementia, and acquired brain injury population).

Assist with assessment of participant needs and areas of intervention in consultation with and under the supervision of the Manager of Community Support Services (CSS) or designate. Identifies unsafe conditions or practices and takes appropriate action to address them including reporting or removing hazards.

Key Accountabilities

- The staff will be responsible to assist the senior programmer with recreation program planning, organization and implementation.
- The staff will be responsible to develop and lead small and large group programs.
- The staff will support and assist, as needed, with any provisions of personal support required by the participants.
- “provisions of personal support” may include; cueing for successful transfer and ambulation in the program space, cueing for successful and dignified toileting.
- Based on program eligibility perineal care is generally not required, however it may be on occasion.

- Meal preparation and service delivery is required, as needed based on individual care plans.
- The staff will be responsible to assist the senior programmer with recreation program planning,




- Be available as needed for rotation of evenings, weekends, statutory holidays and Christmas holidays, as well as on a relief basis for staff vacation and illness.

- The staff will be responsible for documenting participant progress in individual clinical charts and in daily logs.
- The staff will collaborate regularly with the Senior Programmer regarding program planning
- The staff will optimize on-the-job clinical learning opportunities to develop knowledge, and skills related the specialized populations being served.

- The staff is expected to support a work environment of accountability which honors the uniqueness of all staff, volunteers, participants and their families.
- Contributes to a transparent culture of client and staff safety by adhering to and abiding by patient and staff safety policies and procedures set by SJHC.
- Promotes an setting that encourages and supports change using change leadership theory.

Qualifications & Experience

- In pursuit or completion of an undergraduate Degree with a preference in the field of Health or Social Sciences (or Nursing), with an emphasis in Gerontology, Recreation or Kinesiology.
- Related experience with program development and implementation in a social/recreational setting.
- Experience in assisting with the provision of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) or a willingness to learn
- Valid Criminal Reference/Vulnerable Sectors Check, Two Step TB Test (6 months recent) and Record of Immunization.

- Access to vehicle and clean driving record.
- Excellent communication, problem solving and organizational skills.
- Understanding and knowledge of the normal aging process and dementia.

- Proficient and enhanced writing and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to be self-directed in pursuing education/knowledge related to an older adult population.

- Committed to a team approach.
- Good attendance record.

- Alzheimer’s Day Centre-100 Westmount Rd.
- Out N’ About- 25 Wellington St. West.
- Fergus Day Out Centre, 234 St. Patrick St. East
- Acquired Brain Injury Program, 25 Wellington St. West.
- Overnight Stay Respite Program, 100 Westmount Rd.

Program hours vary by location and service. Shifts are primarily ranging from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday to Friday and Tuesday evenings until 8:30pm. On occasion shifts may be requested outside of these hours including weekends and holidays.
