Acheson
The Labourer performs tasks involving physical labour at commercial/institutional construction sites and operates a variety of hand and power tools, and equipment to assist other site personnel.
Functional Responsibilities
- Observe and comply with all health and safety regulations, following secure work practices and procedures at all times
- Learn and participate in Lean practices and processes, with the goal of continual improvement and reduction of waste
- Clean and prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards
- Load and unload construction materials, and move materials to work areas
- Erect and dismantle concrete forms, scaffolding, ramps, catwalks, shoring, and barricades required at construction sites
- Assist tradespersons such as carpenters, bricklayers, cement finishers, roofers, and glaziers in construction activities
- Assist heavy equipment operators to secure special attachments to equipment, signal operator to guide them in moving equipment, and provide assistance in other activities
- Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, compact and level earth to grade specifications, using appropriate tools
- Remove rubble and other debris at construction sites using rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, and other equipment
- Tend or feed machines or equipment used in construction such as mixers, compressors, and pumps
- Oil and grease hoists and similar equipment
- Direct traffic at or near construction sites
- Perform other activities at construction sites as directed
Working Conditions
- Construction environment (regularly working near moving mechanical parts/equipment and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, exposure to dust, asphalt, and noise)
- Working with various tools and construction materials
- Lifting, pulling or pushing, carrying, and manipulating objects of up to 50 lbs
- Walking and standing for long periods of time
- Bending, crouching, and crawling
- Climbing ladders and working at heights
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required (e.g. hard hat, safety boots, etc.)
- Additional hazards associated with the construction industry
- Driving a company vehicle and/or operating equipment
Qualifications
- Understands and adheres to all safety policies and procedures
- Knowledge of appropriate materials, methods, and the tools required in various construction processes
- Able to follow direction from supervisor, work independently, and complete daily activities according to work schedule
- Able to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and perform strenuous physical labour under adverse field conditions
- Willing to work out of town if/when required
Education/Licenses
- Certificate(s) required to operate applicable equipment
- Able to obtain security clearances if required for project
- Registered as an Apprentice Carpenter preferred
Experience
- At least one (1) year of experience working on a commercial/institutional construction site
