Your Opportunity

The Royal Alexandra Hospital is one of two Tertiary Trauma Centers in the City of Edmonton and is one of Alberta’s largest and longest serving hospitals. Centrally located in Edmonton’s downtown core, the RAH serves a diverse community, including some of our province’s most vulnerable and marginalized population. PCU 31 is a 24 bed plus an 8 bed observation unit that provides care primarily to thoracic and general surgery patients .Unit 31 serves the northern region for thoracic and general surgeries as well as trauma patients.

Patients are received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care units, and directly from home and/or medical clinics. A Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive patient and family care on an acute surgical unit in accordance with RAH and AHS policy and procedures. We have modified nursing care on all shifts with Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Health Care Aides working cohesively within the collaborative model of care.

Successful candidates will be expected to participate in quality improvement initiatives at the front line; supporting and maintaining high quality patient care strategies within the Surgery program. LPNs are expected to direct and monitor the care provided by health care aids. Position requires candidates to perform moderate to heavy work on a regular basis in order to ensure secure patient care and safety of unit staff.

All staff are required to assist with mobilization of patients with a variety of ambulation needs and disabilities.

Description

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team, utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking,



problem solving, and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, and demonstrated skill level, in alignment with applicable legislation, standards of practice, policies, and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, high quality, patient and family centred care while reflecting the shared vision and values of the organization.

Required Qualifications

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications

Demonstrated excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and priority setting skills required. Demonstrated reliability required. Able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment. Basic computer skills are required. Resume required.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years previous thoracic and general surgery experience preferred. IV, PCA, Epidural, Drains and Wound Care experience preferred. Experience with monitoring of Central Lines preferred.
