New Beginnings is driven by a mission to foster healing and resilience in Indigenous communities through a Métis-rooted, community-accountable approach to recovery that centres dignity, cultural identity, and the inherent strengths of individuals, families, and communities. In partnership with the Otipemisiwak Métis Government - the self-governing Métis Nation of Alberta, founded in 1928 and representing over 70,000 Métis citizens - New Beginnings provides pre-treatment stabilization & recovery transition programs grounded in Métis ways of healing and community care.

Guided by Métis values of wahkohtowin (kinship), reciprocity, and cultural continuity, this program integrates evidence-based clinical care with Métis and Indigenous healing practices. This includes land-based approaches and connection to culture and identity, alongside Western clinical care, guided by the resident’s preferences, identity, and chosen cultural supports.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Medical Manager, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides high-quality, trauma- and violence-informed nursing care to individuals participating in addiction treatment and recovery. The LPN works as part of a multidisciplinary team and contributes to the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing of residents through clinical care, relational support, and culturally grounded practice. This role requires a strong commitment to relational accountability, understanding that care is not transactional, but rooted in ongoing relationships with residents, families, and the broader circle of care.

Care planning actively includes family, kinship, and community supports where desired by the resident, honouring their relationships, identity, and self-determined pathways of healing.

Core Practice Expectations In addition to meeting all regulated nursing standards, the LPN is expected to:

· Practice in alignment with cultural safety and humility standards and practices, including ongoing self-reflection on bias, power, and privilege

· Actively contribute to a safe, anti-racist environment, addressing Indigenous-specific and Métis-specific racism promptly and appropriately

· Support and respect the integration of traditional and complementary healing practices, including ceremony, cultural supports, and land-based approaches, as guided by the resident’s wishes, identity, and care team. Provide care that is wholistic,



recognizing the interconnectedness of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health

· Advocate for residents by identifying and addressing barriers to culturally safe care

· Honour each resident’s identity, lived experience, and self-determined healing journey

Role-Specific Accountabilities:

· Safely administer medications as prescribed and ensure accurate, timely documentation in accordance with established clinical and professional standards.

· Administer detoxification/withdrawal medications in alignment with scope of practice, standing orders and individualized care plans

· Conduct medication reconciliation to ensure accurate and complete medication histories and identify discrepancies at key transition points.

· Maintain medication inventory in accordance with medication safety policies, including proper storage, tracking, and documentation aligned with accreditation standards.

· Monitor and assess residents’ physical health status within LPN scope of practice and promptly escalate changes or concerns to the Registered Nurse and/or Medical Director

· Conduct clinical assessments, including but not limited to CIWA, COWS, PAWS, falls assessments and suicide risk assessments; contribute to care planning, revisions, and safety planning

· Participate in the delivery of medically supported detox/withdrawal care, ensuring interventions are responsive to resident needs and aligned with clinical best practices and site policies.

· Support the safe and respectful integration of traditional and/or complementary medicines, ensuring collaboration with medical providers, Elders, and cultural supports where appropriate

· Hold a key role with admissions by completing nursing assessments and gathering relevant medical, social, family, and community history, including understanding the resident’s cultural identity, kinship networks, and community context. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to develop and implement individualized, culturally responsive care plans

· Provide education to residents regarding medications, treatment plans, and recovery, in a way that is accessible, respectful, and empowering

· Offer emotional support grounded in dignity, hope, and non-judgment, recognizing the impacts of trauma, colonization, and systemic barriers

· Model behavior conducive to a safe, respectful, and therapeutic environment, responding to medical emergencies and supporting de-escalation as needed

· Maintain clear, accurate, and timely documentation of all nursing care, observations, and interventions

· Adhere to infection prevention and control (IPAC) standards and facility protocols,



including routine cleaning and sanitization, implementation of additional precautions, support of facility-based measures, and participation in outbreak prevention and response as required.

· Work collaboratively across all departments (clinical, kitchen, support staff, leadership) to support a community-as-method model of care

· Contribute to continuous quality improvement, safety, and culturally grounded care practices across the site

· Practice relational accountability by maintaining respectful, consistent, and transparent relationships with residents, families, and team members, including participation in repair when harm or misunderstanding occurs.

· Assist with medical administrative duties as required

Qualifications:

· Current registration and good standing with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA)

· Experience in addiction treatment, mental health, or community-based care is an asset

· Demonstrated commitment to culturally safe, anti-racist, and trauma-informed care

· Knowledge of or willingness to learn about Indigenous health perspectives, Métis culture, and land-based healing approaches

· Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build meaningful relationships across diverse backgrounds

· Ability to navigate complex and sensitive situations with compassion, humility, and confidentiality

· CPR/First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain
