We are Systematix and we are currently looking for a
SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA)
for our Public Sector client.
This role is 100% onsite in Toronto or Oshawa. ABOUT THE PROJECT:
The Database Administrator will provide operational support, administration, maintenance, monitoring, and optimization of enterprise database environments supporting critical Ministry applications and services. The role is responsible for ensuring the
availability, integrity, security, recoverability, and performance
of databases across multiple technology platforms, including
Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, and Oracle . Working within a highly available and mission-critical enterprise environment, the DBA will collaborate with application support, infrastructure, development, data, architecture, vendor, and project teams to support both legacy and modernized systems. ABOUT THE RESPONSIBILITIES:
In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining stable, secure, high-performing database environments while supporting application modernization, infrastructure upgrades, releases, and ongoing operational requirements. You will work closely with cross-functional technical teams and stakeholders to: Provide day-to-day operational support for Ministry applications and associated database environments. Monitor database health, availability, performance, storage utilization, and overall system reliability. Troubleshoot and resolve database-related incidents, service requests, performance issues, and data integrity problems. Support production, development, test, disaster recovery, and high-availability environments. Administer, configure, patch, upgrade, and maintain
Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, and Oracle
environments. Perform database installations, migrations, refreshes, cloning, and environment setup. Maintain database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures. Manage database security, access, roles, permissions, encryption, and compliance requirements. Analyze and tune database queries, indexes, execution plans, and system resources. Configure and support high-availability technologies, including
SQL Server Failover Clustering and Always On Availability Groups . Support SQL Server upgrades, including
SQL Server 2019 to 2022 and SQL Server 2022 to 2025 . Support change, release, deployment, patching,
and workplace-management activities using established ITIL practices. Assess and test Change Requests (CRQs) containing technical content. Develop and maintain technical documentation, operational procedures, runbooks, and support knowledge. Participate in root-cause analysis, technical reviews, and post-incident activities. Provide technical expertise for application modernization, migration, and infrastructure-upgrade initiatives. Support cloud, virtualization, and hybrid infrastructure initiatives where applicable. Collaborate on data architecture and data requirements with analysts, engineers, data scientists, developers, and architecture teams. Design and implement
REST API integrations
using established integration best practices. Ensure solution designs comply with OPS security standards, policies, reference architecture, and Ministry-specific requirements. Participate in knowledge-transfer sessions and provide technical reports and updates as required. Microsoft

Must-have:
Strong hands-on
SQL Server administration experience with SQL Server 2019, 2022 and 2025 . Hands-on experience with at least one additional DBMS:
Oracle 19c, DB2/Windows, or DB2/zOS . Experience designing and implementing
REST API integrations
and associated best practices. Experience configuring and maintaining SQL Server cluster instances. Strong knowledge of
Always On Availability Groups , including setup, monitoring, failover, and troubleshooting. Experience supporting enterprise database environments, including monitoring, troubleshooting, security, and operational support. Experience supporting high-availability and disaster recovery environments. Knowledge of Windows Server, Linux/RHEL and/or mainframe environments. Experience with change management, release management,
application monitoring, and enterprise support processes. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with developers, architects, project managers, QA, infrastructure teams, and other stakeholders. Nice-to-have:
Strong
performance-tuning
experience, including diagnosing and optimizing queries, indexes, execution plans, and server performance. Strong understanding of
backup and recovery and HA/DR strategies . Hands-on experience upgrading SQL Server 2019 to 2022 and SQL Server 2022 to 2025. Experience supporting large-scale government or enterprise applications. Previous
Ontario Public Service (OPS) or broader public-sector experience . Knowledge of cloud technologies and hybrid infrastructure environments. Experience with automation and scripting for database administration. Experience with middleware, gateways, and middleware administration. Familiarity with Agile development environments and ITIL practices. Relevant Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, IBM DB2, or related certifications. ABOUT THE ROLE:

The average hourly pay range for this field is as follows: Senior:
