Mechanical Project Manager
Ottawa, ON | On-site with future hybrid potential
$90,000–$120,000 CAD, depending on experience
Make an Impact on One of Ottawa’s Largest Healthcare Projects
Salas O’Brien is looking for a Mechanical Project Manager to serve as a key on-site representative on a major hospital project in Ottawa.
This is an opportunity for an experienced mechanical professional who understands complex building systems and enjoys being where design and construction come together. You’ll work closely with contractors, owners, commissioning professionals, and our engineering team to help ensure mechanical systems are being installed and delivered as intended.
You don’t need to know everything on day one. What matters most is that you have enough experience with large commercial, institutional, or industrial mechanical systems to recognize issues, ask the right questions, provide guidance, and know when to bring in additional technical expertise.
You’ll be supported by an experienced mechanical team while having the autonomy and visibility that come with representing Salas O’Brien directly on site.
What You’ll Do In this role, you will:
- Serve as a primary on-site mechanical representative for a major healthcare construction project.
- Work closely with contractors, owners, architects, commissioning professionals, authorities, and other project stakeholders.
- Review the installation of HVAC, plumbing, drainage, medical gas, fire protection, controls, and other mechanical building systems.
- Review shop drawings, RFIs, and other construction documentation.
- Support contract administration activities and help resolve field questions and installation issues.
- Identify situations where work may not align with the design intent or project requirements and communicate concerns constructively.
- Provide practical guidance to project stakeholders while partnering with our broader mechanical engineering team for additional technical support when needed.
- Help maintain strong working relationships across the project team while representing Salas O’Brien professionally.
- Participate in project coordination meetings and communicate issues, risks, and next steps clearly.
- Support the successful delivery of the project from both a technical and client-service perspective.
What Will Make You Successful This role is a strong fit for someone who combines mechanical systems knowledge with strong judgment and people skills.
You should be comfortable walking onto a construction site,
understanding what you are looking at, engaging contractors in productive conversations, and knowing when an issue needs to be addressed or escalated.
Successful candidates will bring
- Approximately five or more years of experience working with mechanical systems in commercial, institutional, healthcare, or industrial buildings.
- Working knowledge of larger HVAC and building mechanical systems and how those systems interact.
- Experience with mechanical design, construction administration, construction oversight, commissioning, mechanical contracting, or a related environment.
- The ability to review mechanical installations and identify potential issues or inconsistencies.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- The judgment and diplomacy to address problems constructively without damaging important project relationships.
- The ability to work independently on site while knowing when to seek additional technical input.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make thoughtful decisions in a fast-moving project environment.
- Familiarity with applicable building codes and industry standards, including ASHRAE, CSA, and NFPA.
- Familiarity with Revit and Microsoft Office tools.
- A valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
Your Background We are more interested in what you have done and what you can do than in checking every traditional credential box.
A university or college education in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline can be valuable, but we will also consider candidates whose experience has given them the technical knowledge and practical capability required for the role.
Registration with PEO, OACETT, or another professional body is welcomed but not required.
Healthcare experience is an asset but is not required if you have robust experience with complex commercial, institutional, or industrial mechanical systems.
Candidates may come from a variety of backgrounds, including mechanical engineering, mechanical contracting, construction management, commissioning, contract administration, or related building-systems roles.
Why Join Salas O’Brien?
This role offers more than the opportunity to manage a project.
You’ll have the chance to:
- Play a visible role in the delivery of a significant Ottawa healthcare project.
- Work directly with clients, contractors, and senior project stakeholders.
- Be integrated into an experienced design and engineering team rather than operating on your own.
- Build broader experience across mechanical systems, construction, and client-facing project delivery.
- Learn from senior mechanical professionals who will provide ongoing technical support and mentorship.
- Join an employee-owned organization where you can continue to grow beyond this project.
You’ll begin with training and time with our broader team and will continue to have regular support and check-ins from senior mechanical team members throughout the assignment.
