Tomlinson is Eastern Canada’s leader in environmental, construction and transportation infrastructure services. The Asphalt Superintendent is responsible for the management of the asphalt, grinding and manhole adjustment crews in Tomlinson’s day to day operations.The incumbent will work daily with Operations Managers, Project Managers and Superintendents to maximize scheduling and efficiency of all the paving, adjustment and grinding crews. They will be responsible to develop and improve existing processes such as scheduling and dispatching to ensure optimum crew utilization while maintaining a high level of quality control.Job Location: Kingston region & Eastern OntarioVacancy Type: ReplacementPRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIESManage, train and mentor asphalt paving crews, adjustment crews and grinding crewsSeek out and engage with clients to actively pursue business opportunities in the Eastern Ontario regionsDevelop and implement work processes with foremen and crews utilizing the resources within TomlinsonCoordinate operations with the Quality Control Department and Asphalt PlantsAssist with the coordination meetings to review the asphalt demands and maximize efficiencies in production, clients, plant limitations, liquid A/C suppliers etc.Communicate scheduling needs with asphalt plants, scales, quarries and QC departmentEnsure all CoR and Health and Safety requirements are being adhered to dailyEnsure driver compliance with all paving and iron crew CVOR vehiclesEnsure crews have proper job information, utility locates, mix types, production rates,
trucking information etc.Actively review new technology to develop efficienciesDevelop cross training among crewsTrack project productions and report productivity to project managersCoordinate with the trucking department, to maximize trucking efficiency and capacityReview jobsites prior to organizing crew movements to verify jobsite limitations and conditionsResponsible for scheduling crews for weekend and night work when requiredCoordinate the effective usage of Material Transfer VehiclesManage the various paving equipment storage and repairsAttend owner and client pre-construction meetings to represent the asphalt portion of contractsEnsure that we are meeting or exceeding our client’s expectationsAssist with allocating worker vacation time while maintaining project demandsCoordinate with our maintenance facilities for the repairs and maintenance of the equipmentCoordinate with our tack coat supplier and distributorsWork hand in hand with our quality department to resolve issuesProvide valuable insight to estimators during tenderingEmployee management Writes and delivers performance evaluations and development plans with foremen Work with foremen to ensure quality crew are in place Recruitment,
selection and employee relations managementDemonstrate behaviors that foster Tomlinson’s leadership competencies: Effectively communicates Maintains strategic perspective Motivates and empowers Organizationally agile DecisiveWORKING CONDITIONSWorking in an outside environmentWorking in traffic and around pedestriansMay be required to work long hours and work occasional, nights and weekendsProject locations are mainly in the Kingston region and Eastern OntarioEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE5+ years of experience being the foreman of a main line paving crew in addition to 3+ years of experience as a lead hand or tail enderAbility to continually promote mentoring and crew cross trainingStrong working knowledge of Book 7 Traffic ControlGood interpersonal, teamwork and communication skillsExcellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle simultaneous projects to meet tight deadlinesStrong attention to detailComputer knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel and OutlookKnowledge of SAP and Hard Dollard would be an assetCOMPENSATION INFORMATIONThe expected salary range for this position is $100,000 - $140,000 annually.
