Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of a Physician and/or Registered Orthopaedic Technologist, the Orthopaedic Technician provides technical support in the care and treatment of patients with orthopaedic conditions. The incumbent assists in the application, maintenance, and removal of casts, splints, braces, and traction equipment, while providing patient education and support.
The Orthopaedic
Technician works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to ensure secure, effective, and patient-centered care.
Responsibilities
- Apply and remove casts, splints, braces, and orthopaedic devices under the direct supervision of a Physician and/or Registered Orthopaedic Technologist.
- Assist with dressing changes, and the removal of sutures, staples, and pins as directed.
- Prepare patients and equipment for orthopaedic procedures.
- Set up and monitor skin and skeletal traction equipment as directed.
- Assess and report observations regarding pain, swelling, skin integrity, circulation, sensation, and movement.
- Educate patients and families regarding cast care, splint care, skin care, and activity restrictions.
- Document patient care activities in accordance with hospital policies and professional standards.
- Maintain stock levels and inventory of orthopaedic supplies and equipment.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Support a culture of patient safety and quality improvement.
- Participate in departmental education, orientation programs, and continuous learning activities.
- Perform other duties consistent with the role
Education/Experience
- Successful completion of a high school diploma or recognized equivalent.
- Successful completion of a recognized Orthopaedic Technician Program or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Membership with the Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists (CSOT).
- Certification in Orthopaedic Technology obtained through CSOT.
- Understanding theory and application skin and skeletal traction.
- Understanding of the proper application of aseptic technique in dressing change, pin and suture removal, setting up of surgical fields.
- Knowledge of Meditech.
- BCLS certification an asset.
- Evidence of compliance with CSOT continuing education requirements and maintenance of annual certification.
- Completion of mandatory organizational certifications and training (e.g., Workplace Violence Prevention, AODA, Health & Safety, Infection Prevention and Control).
- Minimum two years recent orthopaedic clinical experience preferred.
- Experience working in fracture clinic, emergency department, operating room and/or outpatient orthopaedic settings an asset.
- Preceptor, mentor, or clinical teaching experience.

Hours of Work: Day Shift, Monday - Friday.
