Job Summary & Key Responsibilities The School of Architecture at Dalhousie University invites applications for a Part-Time Academic Instructor position in the Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies (BEDS) Architecture Program. BEDS is a Pre-Professional undergraduate Architecture degree. Students enroll in the BEDS degree in their third year of undergraduate education, entering a two-year sequence in Year 3 and 4.

The course is an introductory Architecture Technology course in Methods and Materials. This is a 50% co-instruction position, paid at half the CUPE rate. The course is structured as a 1.5 hr lecture + 3 hr lab each week. Seminars are led by the instructor graduate teaching assistants. The format of the seminar/workshop is adaptable based on instructor’s course structure. The course cohort is approximately 70+ students.

CREDIT HOURS: 3

Through hands-on and observational exercises, this course develops tacit understanding of materials, their properties, and applications. Readings introduce terminology, theory, and sizing. Primary topics are: the exclusion and inclusion of water; structural behaviours providing bracing, bearing, and span; and the rudiments of natural light and heat.

The Part-Time Academic will serve as a co-instructor for the course, working collaboratively with the course instructor to develop and deliver the curriculum. Responsibilities will include preparing and delivering lectures; developing course assignments, instructional materials, and supporting resources; providing guidance and feedback to students; evaluating and grading student work; and participating in course coordination and administration. The co-instructor will also assist in preparing course materials for accreditation review. This will include organizing course outlines, assignments,



assessment materials, and examples of student work according to the relevant accreditation categories and submission requirements.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position

Education and Experience

- M.Arch or equivalent master’s degree in architecture or a closely related field;
- Previous experience teaching a large-enrolment undergraduate architectural technology course, or comparable college- or university-level teaching experience;
- Demonstrated knowledge of architectural materials and methods of construction;
- Experience preparing and delivering lectures and developing effective assignments and instructional materials;
- Experience evaluating student work and providing constructive written and verbal feedback; and
- Strong organizational and collaborative skills.

Professional Competencies

- Ability to communicate complex technical ideas clearly and effectively;
- Ability to facilitate student learning across a range of experience and ability levels; and
- Ability to work cooperatively with diverse faculty and student populations.

Preferred Qualifications

- Professional architectural experience; and
- Familiarity with architectural accreditation requirements and the preparation of course materials for accreditation review.
