Our mission is to manifest magical, joyful, and cutting-edge art to expand the possibilities of Blackness for national audiences. Over more than three decades, we have accumulated a wealth of archival material documenting our rich artistic history.POSITION OVERVIEWWe are seeking an Archival Assistant to lead the digitization and organization of BCurrent’s extensive archival collection spanning over 30 years of artistic production. This role is ideal for someone passionate about preserving cultural history, comfortable working independently with diverse media formats, and skilled in creating organized systems for long-term accessibility.POSITION DETAILSWage: $20.00/hourHours: 35 hours/weekTerm: 8 weeks, starting June 15, 2026Location: Toronto, ON (hybrid)Application closing date: June 13, 2026KEY RESPONSIBILITIESDigitizationReview and digitize archival content across multiple formats, including VHS tapes, cassette tapes, Mini DV footage, and other legacy mediaUpload digitized materials to cloud storage with consistent file naming conventionsEnsure quality control of digitized files and maintain backup protocolsCataloguing & organizationCreate a comprehensive inventory of all archival materialsDocument key metadata for each item: production title, year, dates, writers, directors, performers, and other relevant detailsOrganize cloud storage to mirror the physical inventory, enabling easy search and retrievalResearch and verify information about archival items where documentation is incompleteWebsite & communicationsUpdate the archival section of the BCurrent website with production photos, graphics,
and historical informationCreate filterable content allowing audiences to explore our body of work by year, production, or artist(If time permits) Create a highlight video showcasing memorable moments from our archiveQUALIFICATIONSRequiredStrong organizational skills and attention to detailUnderstanding of archival processes and best practices for preservationFamiliarity and comfort working with various media formats (VHS, cassette, Mini DV, digital files)Ability to work independently and manage time effectively across a large-scale projectComfort with cloud-based storage systems and basic data entryAssetsBackground in film studies, documentary production, or media artsExperience with digitization equipment and format conversionKnowledge of metadata standards and cataloguing systemsBasic video editing skillsInterest in Black Canadian theatre and performing arts historyWHAT WE PROVIDEDigitization equipment including playback devices and conversion toolsAccess to additional equipment and resources as neededArchival materials delivered in organized containers for processingFlexible work arrangement with regular check-ins to discuss progress and problem-solveOpportunity to contribute to preserving over 30 years of Black Canadian performing arts historySKILLS YOU WILL DEVELOPAdaptability, communication, creativity and innovation, digital skills, problem-solving, and technical skills.EQUITY & ACCESSThis position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program.
